Secret of the Rose is the second book in the Legacy of Magick series by Ellen Dugan. We pick back up with Autumn and the search for the Blood Moon Grimoire. There is (another) ghost haunting the Bishop family manor, someone is after teenage girls in the town and things are heating up with Autumn’s love interest, Duncan. Family secrets emerge which could split the family apart as they try to come together to learn the secrets of the Blood Moon Grimoire.
The Lovely: This book was an improvement over the the first book of the series as the romace was more realistic. The sub-plot with the incidents happening to the teenage girls was actually my favorite. The twist at the end was unexpected and gut-wrenching.
The Mundane: Again, even pace, even characters. In some ways, this book just chugged along.
The Dreadful: Again, Autumn just does not come across as a 24 (now 25?) year old. She seems almost as immature as her teenage cousins and does not learn from her own actions.
Rating: 4/5 Stars
Recommendation: Again, another quick read (or in my case, an audiobook). Much like the first book, it still reads more like a YA book and I didn’t connect to any of the characters. Even four months later I haven’t gotten past the first chapter of the next book of the series, although I do plan to at some point.
I think the beginning was slow to start as having just read the previous book but as the story developed it was hard to put down. Most of the twist and turns I found were expected but the details surrounding them were found to be shockers and exciting causing me to cry and laugh out loud at times. Also the details of the smells, Gem stones, and flowers with their uses, and benefits interesting and an added bonus. Looking forward to her next book in her series.
The story structure was well done and original. I thoroughly enjoyed most of the characters and how their characteristics developed; but, I must say the actions of the character Autumn was very frustrating and certainly not fathering to the age group of 25. Her inability to gain wisdom from her experiences - enabling her to judge others less harshly and realize the impact of her own poor judgment was rather uncomfortable even into book 3 of the series. I afraid I stopped reading midway thru book three… sad I thought the book Premise was a good!
Usually, when I see more than 4 books in a series, I quit reading. It’s just too easy for an author to repeat storylines and descriptions. Kind of a pay by word rather than new ideas for the readers. However, I think this particular author may be more inventive. I’m going on to book 3 with the hopes that new ideas and new diversions keep the wonderful witchy world going. This is a sad, overwhelming book with a lot of potentially new characters that bring new skills and deeper family ties into play. Book 2 hopefully will prove that this series is worth 12 books!
I loved it. I like how it combines real magick and fake magick. I also liked how it kept you on your toes. What I mean by that is you dont't know what will happen or you think it will go one way but it dosnt go that way. I also like the main charters have flaws, you get to know there world, but you also learn more just like the main charters does.
a sad time for the Bishop family as they bury one of their own. Finding the second part of the grimoire had a great cost. Secrets revealed, other secrets still hidden and a person going mad from the lust for great power.
Compelling characters created with a deep understanding of family dynamics make the story believable. It also has a wonderful variety of paranormal talents and they constantly surprise. I couldn't put it down. Great series.
This series is amazing at keeping my attention. I can't help but to immediately dive into one after another. I feel as though I know the characters personally.
It must be a different experience for me to be starting a fairly l ong series than it would have been for those reading it as the books came out. Watching characters develop is fascinating.
I enjoyed the deeper connections and relationships of the characters. It is both intriguing and fun! I can almost feel the magick that is displayed throughout the story!
This story was a real treat. Your sense of drama as well as your sense of humor held me captive the whole time I was reading. Looking forward to book 3.
Another super cozy story about Autumn and her magickal family. I enjoyed this second installment just as much as the first. This one involved someone hurting cousin Holly's cheerleading squad using poppets.
More foul language that was totally unnecessary and just destroyed the book for me. I am going to read the next one, against my better judgment, and if it is the same, I am done with this author. I would have given these books more than two stars but for the terribly foul language that is nearly every other word that the characters say. Some authors seem to think that this makes the books seem more real since "everybody speaks that way"...Well, they are wrong as not everyone uses that kind of language. Some are intelligent enough to express their ideas without a plethora of foul language.
I can not wait for the final book in the set of 3 to be published. Ellen Dugan is able to hold me spellbound in the web she weaves with this story. The action held me riveted from start to finish. The author has made me care about these characters and I didn't want my time with them to end!
I love this series! In some books, you can predict where the author is going to take the story, but Ellen Dugan kept me on my toes with lots of twists and turns. Looking forward to the release of book 3 in January.
A solid story. I appreciate the fact that the characters are not perfect. The family has a great dynamic. Looking forward to book 3 in January (but I would not object if Ms Dugan released the book earlier than that. hint hint)
Great follow on from Legacy of magick, though the ending of this book was very sad! Loving this series so far! This series would make a fantastic TV series! And so on to book three! An update, I have just finished re reading this book, and it was just as good as the first time I read it.
