K. Douglas Bassett graduated from Yuba City High School and Shasta College (Redding, CA) where he played baseball and learned his love for the San Francisco Giants. He later played semi-professional baseball. He earned a Masters degree from Brigham Young University and a Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico. He taught for the LDS Church Education System in Arizona, California, and Utah. At the time of his death he taught at the Utah Valley University Orem Institute, where he enjoyed all his students. He loved the Book of Mormon, which lead him to publish several books (Latter-Day Commentary on The Book of Mormon, Latter-Day Commentary on the New Testament, Commentary on Isaiah: In the Book of Mormon, Doctrinal Insights to the Book of Mormon, Eternal Nature of the Body, Life lessons from the Book of Mormon, Kisses at the Window, The Barber's Song, and How to Lengthen Your Stride without Getting a Hernia). He excelled in all sports. He loved the outdoors, especially using his chain saw, and to organize wood cutting projects.
I loved reading this book along with the Book of Mormon this year. This commentary provided talks and quotes from apostles and prophets on each chapter. I now just wish that I had a great power to retain all that I have read!
Honestly, this is one of the most FRUSTRATING reference books I've ever seen!
For each verse or group of verses, he'll give you a quote or two, but then also list a few books or articles with page references (without telling you what they say, why they're important, or if they're just backing up the quotes).
Neither is there a bibliography of all the references he's cited.
So here I am, writing down all these books that I need to find (11 so far) and trying to list the page numbers and what scripture he's tying them to, and wondering how this is helpful at all! And I'm only to page 4 of his book!
So far, the quotes that are actually on the page and a few that I've been able to look up in the Ensign, ARE truly insightful. And I have no doubt this information he's compiled is a remarkable collection of resources.
This book has quotes from LDS Scholars and Church Authorities that go along with scriptures in the Book of Mormon. In my scripture study last year, I would read a chapter in the Book of Mormon and then read the quotes in this book that went a long with it. This book also got my attention in reading "An Approach to the Book of Mormon" by Hugh Nibley. By reading the three together, I really increased my testimony of truthfulness of the Book of Mormon.
Brother Bassett was one of my institute teachers and although there aren't many super recent quotes included from apostles and prophets because of how long ago it was published, it is still a great resource to use in conjunction with BOM study.
