A most excellent introduction to the Gospels and especially to Jesus as presented solely by the Gospels. Highly recommended. Donald Senior takes an approach of the three-fold development of biblical inspiration; that is, rather than the completely unhistorical and untenable approach of "the Holy Spirit moved the Gospel-writer's pen", the process of biblical inspiration was at work from the very beginning: firstly, through the actual historical happenings of Jesus' life; secondly, through the word-of-mouth transmission (and interpretation) and liturgical appropriation of those events; thirdly, through the Gospel-writer's reception of those traditions and his own efforts to compile it all into one single book (or in Luke's case, two, but Acts is not entirely relevant for this discussion). This process is essential to keep in mind when discussing the background of the Gospels; indeed, without understanding this, any discussion of the Gospel backgrounds is hardly possible.
This book was easy to read and enjoyable. The only reason I didn’t give the author full points is that I found that if something is unbelievable such as the coin in the mouth of a fish, it is explained away. Do people not understand that Creator God is creative and able to do anything?!
This book offered some interesting perspectives. It provided insight into how and when Gospels were written. It gave introspection into the ministry of Jesus. It helped to deepen my understanding and faith.
Was really excellent - and not just for someone studying Christianity, I think it could appeal to those curious about Jesus in general, but if they read it they should keep a bible handy to read the referenced passages. Will post a formal review (have to write one anyway for my class) soon.
Love how the author fleshes out the back story of the gospels. Great read for anyone looking for a simple glimpse(i.e., not too scholarly) into these great books and must importantly wanting to deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ.
