To say that Cal's been through hell and back would be a misstatement. He's been to hell, all right, and he seems to be stuck there for good. When we last checked in on Cal, he and Mo'Lock had just witnessed the vile, horrifying transformation of Cal's lovely ex, Sabrina Lynch, into a minion of the vampire Nosferatu. After that Cal disappeared for a bit, and at the start of ...more

In this episode, Cal mopes a lot. People do tend to die around him and it's legit that he form a complex about it... but I still don't want to read about it. Not in a short-form work at least. I'd rather angry vs whiny. Especially when none of the deaths in this series are his fault.

As for the plot of this one, "This is such cliche bullshit" is a direct, and accurate, quote from Cal.

You'd think Cal taking a case involving the birth of the Antichrist would be the perfect start for a Baby's Day Out pastiche, but this ends up being one of the more mundane entries in the Criminal Macabre catalog. There's no real conflict under the surface besides Cal's ongoing battle with addiction, and the monsters aren't quite bizarro enough to sell it on their own. Nice nod to Niles' entry in Dark Delicacies, though.

Really interesting Cal Mcdonald Mystery even though it seemed to abruptly come to an end. So what happens to the baby? Hopefully my comic-obsessed boyfriend will show me a sequel to this. Cal Mcdonald is an interesting character because when he fights, he fights like crazy. And he seems to be invincible in a way that's not so. He gets messed up in a way that would send a normal person to the hospital for a whole month or two. But Cal Mcdonald just patches himself up, smokes some cigarettes, and ...more

I can't get enough of Niles' Cal McDonald stories - no matter how many times Cal "wins" vs. the baddies and saves the day, things continue to get worse for the guy.
