Pageant: The Beauty Contest

Rate this book
Lovegrove celebrates the culture of the beauty contest from the well-known spectacles of Miss World and Mr. Universe to the flamboyance of Miss Sausage Queen. An irresistible combination of nostalgia and contemporary kitsch, this is a unique study of the human obsession of the beautiful. 250 illustrations.

There are two versions different front covers yet same back cover from two different publishers. Same exact content and number of pages both softcover. The English (UK) version publusged by Laurence King has a blonde on the cover isbn is 9781856692854 the teNeues version is isbn 9783823855699 and has a pink cover with legs on cover. My contention with the book is that it starts well with a condensed history on the topic some good pictures, good writing and no slamming American sensibilities in the text by the author, half way however the book becomes a hodgepodge of revisionist pageantry sadly and even includes a few sacrilegious /blasphemous pictures not to mention the aforementioned revisionist take on beauty masquerading as pageants. The book should have stayed on topic. At Least the author goes against the P.C. and tried to do a short history on the matter. nonethless it could have been better.
