I received this book for free via Goodreads First Reads.
3 stars.
I came to that rating as although there is a lot of good in the book there is also a lot of room for improvement in the series. It has a good solid plot and a fair share of believable characters. It is about young people on a mission and that quite often leads to successful literature. It has a lot of great descriptive language and wonderful creatures which any fantasy book needs to keep going. I love the idea of the novel but I also feel the execution let it down at times.
Amongst my bugbears is the fact there is more than one character who speaks in a way that comes across as distorted on the page. This is fine for a few pages but slows down the rhythm to a reader. I think it would have been better to mention they spoke differently but to translate their words after the first few times they speak. I also felt the ending was rushed for a first book in a series. There are cliffhangers but maybe there could have been some closure too. I also feel there are a few MacGuffins that will need to be explained in the series.
I would read book 2 and beyond in the series to see what happens to the characters. I would recommend the book to lovers of fantasy. To me a 3 star rating means I enjoyed the book. I think the series could be improved to get higher ratings and I have tried to be honest rather than negative in my review.

Having read the book I gave it to a boy called Buddy. An avid reader who is 9. These are his unedited words. "Oh my gosh that was the best book ever when is the next book out??? My favourite part was when I found out about Craig and it said that the story would continue in the next book! It just made my want to read it all over again…
Which is what I did!
The book has helped me in my learning at school and has inspired me to be an author. It was the first book I had read and got really tense because I was so exited!!! If any one was thinking of reading this book I would very very very very very recommend it to them oh and if there was anyone one who hasn't herd of this book…
You have to read it!!!"
Ps - I loved it too, although like The Fellowship of the Rings or The Hunger Games or some of the Starwars episodes - it does end with a lot more that you want to find out. Because of this I was going to give it a four star rating, but after Buddy and the fact that I started reading at 7pm on a Friday night and couldn't stop until I'd finished at 3am, I gave five.

Well its a classic, never judge a book by its cover! I almost did. I am glad i choose not to. Wicked tale, i liked the characters and the story has depth and intrigue.
