Humanity has long been fascinated by its darkest hours, secretly thrilled with terror and death, musing endlessly over visions of supernatural horrors lurking in dark corners. This book follows our impulses into the shadows of the mind and what lies beyond it, tracing through death and, sometimes, even further.
This was a quick read, and i'm glad i was given the opportunity to pick it up. Wouldn't say the stories particularly scared me, but i'm not holding that against the book because it had different strengths which i appreciated.
Colors of Death is of the brand of horror that uses tragedy as its focal point; you won't really find spooky ghosts or blood by the bucket here. It's a genre Vaselaar uses well though! Given that most of the stories are fairly short (the last one is a bit longer), you don't exactly get a lot of deep character development, but overall the characters that were they were well written and the style used was pleasant to read. Managing to write touching, compelling moments in stories that are only a few pages long is a feat, so kudos for that!
Great collection! My favourite stories are "Coming Home For Dinner", "No One Drowns in Silver Lake", "The Ice King and His Princess", and "Don't Bring Us Back". I look forward to reading more by this talented author.
The following stories are included: 1. Coming Home For Dinner 2. The Beijing Subway 3. The Judge 4. My Older Sister 5. To Phillip: An Apology 6. Tales from Your Local, Small-Town Library 7. No One Drowns in Silver Lake 8. All in a Day's Work 9. Sissy's Eyes 10. The Ice King and His Princess 11. My Encounters with Those People 12. Don't Bring Us Back 13. An Unconventional Adoption 14. Annie, Queen of the Pigs 15. Homemade Pumpkin Pie
Really easy reading. Due to shorter length in of the stories, there was only so much character development that you could have, and some stories were quite cheesy. However, it got me back into reading and chewed through time pretty quickly. Happy. :)
I don't normally read horror, but I've read some of Rona Vaselaar's short stories before, and she's a brilliant writer. Colors of Death is a collection of her short stories. Beautifully written, and each one playing on the fears of our mind. It was incredibly easy to read and I'm excited to read more from this author
I loved this book! It talks about rural life in Minnesota, which makes me want to visit that store so bad, especially Adrian, MN. I also have an autographed copy of the book, signed by the author.
