This book is amazing. I really think that every Christian should read this book. Instead of telling you why you should read this book, here is a quote that blew my mind.
"The great hindrance to trust is self-effort. As long as you have your own wisdom and thoughts and strength, you cannot fully trust God. But when God breaks you down, when everything begins to grow dim before eyes and you see that you understand nothing, then God is near. If you will wait upon God, He will become all you need. This book is short, easy to read, and encouraging. I especially enjoyed the chapter on Peter. However, I gave it three stars because Murray makes living the Christian life sound so easy--that you can do this thing with little sin if you just have enough faith and spend enough time with the Lord. This can be misleading, especially to new Christians who have yet to encounter any real trials. My thinking has been heavily influenced by John Newton, and I believe it is always better to err on the sid

Andrew Murray is such an anointed author. I was literally in tears when I first read about Peter's repentance in chapter 4. Classic and passionate writing like this brought me to my knees. Made me realise we can be very earnest, devoted, godly believer, in whom the power of the flesh is still fairly strong. Andrew reminded me how good God has been to me all these years and how my life is a proof of what the omnipotent God can do.

I recieved the baptism of the Holy Ghost 34 years ago without ever reading the book. Just the cover and title was sufficient to convert me. Always praying that same prayer through the years; Lord, I surrender all. I finally decided to order the book and this time I started reading it. I am almost to the end. How much pain could I have saved myself if I had read it when it was first given to me. Awesome book that all who seek a relationship with God should read. There is so much joy and peace whe

Powerful book. Yes, God demands absolute surrender. Romans 12.1,2 makes that very clear. It takes many many years before Christians realize that 'God gave ALL, and He demands ALL'. We will never understand God and Christ till we surrender ourselves absolutely, totally, fully to the Lord Jesus Christ.

MUST read
This is another great short book by Andrew Murray. Every believer should read it. Every worker, pastor and/or church planter should read it at least twice. It will definitely be a blessing to you and the ones you are serving. You will learn the most important spiritual discipline. I would highly recommend it to anyone. Get it, read it and pass it on.

Christian books are a dime a dozen, but given enough time, a special few rise to the top of the heap. Absolute Surrender will remain one of the most encouraging and compelling books for a believer. It's bold without being harsh, like a grandfather's admonition. Murray was anointed when he wrote this one.

I am at least somewhat familiar [1] with the writing of Andrew Murray, and this book falls along the same lines as the previous books I have read by him. There are some aspects of the thought process of the writer that are a bit strange to me--his striking use of the word shunted, for example, is remarkable--but overall this is an author who tends to be very direct and straightforward. This was a hard one. Let's see why.
First of all, this book is beautiful. Beautifully written and beautifully designed. I love the cover, the texture of the pages, the margins suited for note taking, and the font.
The books is also extremely encouraging. We encounter passages like this one: "And that is what we should seek for —to go on our faces before God, until our hearts learn to believe that the everlasting God Himself will come in to turn our what is wrong, to conquer w ...more

BASIC SYNOPSIS
This is a book teaching you how to surrender yourself to God by essentially becoming nothing and being helpless, in order to overcome sin.
MY THOUGHTS
The book starts out on a bad footing for me. Page 21 says you should pray to God to ask him to break your heart and bring you to dust before him, and believe that nothing good lives in you. This is not a Biblical way to pray. It's not how Jesus teaches us to pray. It's not how David ever prayed, and I'm certai ...more

Christian Audio had this book as their free March audiobook (2019), so I thought, why not? The title alone was convicting and I thought I had heard good things about Andrew Murray. I was not disappointed.
Murray said things that rubbed me the wrong way because I took it as him saying that God is somehow limited by my lack of surrender, and I kept thinking, I don't think anything hinders God, even my disobedience. While that is a true statement and important to remember- God is the sovereign lord ...more

This book was right between a 3 and 4 star for me. It was pretty enjoyable to read, and it had moments where it really stirred me to live more wholly for and dependent upon God and his Spirit. But overall, it sometimes felt like he rambled, it wasn't well organized, and it wasn't Murray's best by any means.
The main thrust of the book was that we cannot live pleasing to God in ministry unless we are totally dependent upon the Holy Spirit. This emphasis came up over and over, and rightly so. Howev ...more

3.75/5 - This book is good for those who can take some of the errant theology with a grain of salt and look at the overarching theme.
What I liked:
The author's prose speak right to you. He literally asks questions of the readers and implores them to become spiritual. His desire to have the reader surrender EVERYTHING is made abundantly clear and I appreciated that. I often use the title to explain part of my theology: to absolutely surrender everything at the feet of Jesus.

Amazing. I wish I read this book 11 years ago when it was given to me! "There are two great privileges in meeting God in a difficulty and knowing Him. The first is that even though the difficulty may have come through my own fault, if I confess it then I can say God has allowed me to come into this situation, to come into this difficulty in order to teach me something. In this situation, God desires that I glorify Him. And if God brings you into any difficulty by an act of someone else, you can

This was a good book that I will revisit. It was short, concise and used much scripture. Scripture was quite familiar, but assembled in a way that provides a vision to get to surrender. Below is a paraphrase of my largest take away, rooted in John 15, a passage in which every believer should be rooted:
"If you want to grow good apples, you must take care of the apple tree. The branches need to be pruned and must be connected to the Vine. The Vine provides all of the nutrients and everything neces ...more

This book was really good. It talked about different ways of surrendering to God and the importance of application through words and actions (not just words alone). It is a short book but I took my time reading it because of how I felt challenged personally. This book isn’t for the “religious” person that wants to “appear good” in the eyes of man. This book is for broken people who are I afraid to lay their failures/shortcoming before God in exchange for His continued grace and mercy. Absolute s

A collection of sermons of Andrew Murray that point to the concept of Absolute Surrender . Surrender is a difficult topic for man to follow as we are directed by our own will and desires. Andrew Murray points us through the various verses in the Bible , the concept of surrender and how the power of the God , the love of Christ and the presence of the Holy Spirit enables us to live the life of surrender. Andrew’s sermons are straight to the point and attached to lucid examples that enables us to

Murray’s call for absolute surrender in the Christian life is a powerful one. I found myself very convicted by my own temptations to cling to my sin and selfishness rather than commit everything to Christ. My greatest concern with Murray’s theology is his Keswick/Higher Life theology, which implies (and at times explicitly states) the possibility of sinless perfection in the life of the Christian. I think Murray’s call for absolute surrender would be strengthened, not weakened, by a more serious

Written around 1897, this work is fresh as a conversation yesterday. The title says it best: we know God best by absolute surrender. I felt as if Pastor Murray was speaking across time to me in his South African Dutch English about my need to know God on the Lord's terms. Origin of Keswick Convention touched upon; that influenced Billy Graham and whipped up the Pentecostal froth. Love + Jesus. Recommended.

While I think this book is great and will reread it in the years to come, I wasn’t a fan of the first chapter as Murray makes some really strong statements that aren’t very biblically backed up. It started the book on a negative note but chapters 4 & 5 were amazing and rekindled in me a desire to devote myself to more prayer. The 2nd half of this book is one of the best I’ve ever read and was nourishing. There are great insights in this book and it is a very worthy read.
Beautiful. Accurate. Powerful.
To walk with God. To abide in Christ. To live a life in constant connection to Christ. To know the joy of each moment having the resources and power of God at your fingertips by our position in Christ and the ever faithful Holy Spirit of God. Christian, don’t miss this classic work of devotion. This book can change a life by pointing us to the sufficiency of the one who, alone, is Life.

Wonderful little gem filled with good reminders about the Christian life being about absolute surrender, completely given over and linked to Christ ("I am the vine you are the branches.")
I found it curious that he opens the first chapter with the Syrian King Ben-Hadad's demand of the wicked King Ahab's unconditional surrender of the city of Samaria as the opening to the topic. Not something that I would of thought of associated with the spiritual life of absolute surrender. ...more

I wouldn't associated surrender with grace and rest. Yet that is what I am left feeling after reading "Absolute Surrender." Andrew Murray gives a stirring call to live like Jesus is real, the Spirit is abiding, and God is glorious. And the only way to live like that is all true is in absolute surrender. In 2020 I want to reread some of the books that have shaped my thinking and stirred my faith. Absolute Surrender is going on that list.

Great explanation of our need to abide in Christ and surrender fully to Him to do and direct as He pleases. As a pastor I kept feeling like I had to figure out how to make the church grow, but God reminded me that it is His church to lead and I need to pause long enough to hear His voice to know how to lead the people in being His church. This book reinforces what God has been working in me.

Absolutely Awesome
The book title caught my attention. This book has my "Thumb Up" from the start till the end. It has completely widen my understanding, not only acquire knowledge of surrendering it all to the King of kings, but how simple to actually just SURRENDER my being onto His presence. Powerful book
This book is written in a very understandable and personable way. Murray illustrates his depiction of absolute surrender so well. It is a heart cry. You feel as if you are reading a hand written letter- it is so intimate. It will challenge encourage and correct you. Don’t read it if you want to stagnate spiritually. It will interrupt your old ways and lead you to a devout life, and nothing less!

I may be in the minority here but it sounds like Murray nearly believed in total sanctification before heaven. That is not possible, we are being sanctified but will not reach full sanctification until heaven. This is particularly evident in the last chapter under the Absolute Surrender heading.
There were parts I agreed with in this book but some of his writing is was hard to comprehend his true meaning.
