Enjoyed the book, kind of sweet. The heroine has tried to be bohemian not wanting to be conventional like her big family but now that she's older she knows that she is changing. The hero is a guy who bought the place where she used to work & still bakes for them.

She quit working because of her back which was injured badly when she was younger. The hero is someone who is very tired of his way of life, he was about to complete his doctorate in physics when he joined

This book was very dated, but very enjoyable. Lila and Samuel were likeable characters. A good, quick read, and it packed a an emotional punch.

I enjoyed this but it was a bit...rough.

The not-so-great?
-Some deeply odd word choices/phrasing
-Lots of confusing head hopping
-Magic peen heals chronic pain from a (view spoiler)

But, weirdly I ended up really liking this, especially the irrepressible Lila.

Another enjoyable read by this author. Started a bit slow but got better. She has a lovely writing style, for example when Lila recalls her brother Eric, who died in the accident that broke her back.*She had been in and out of consciousness, but he knelt beside her and held her hand until she was found. And he told her in a voice of wonder, "There's even more light here." She later found out he had died instantly. She and Eric had been very close and only her grandmother understood why she accep ...more
Early effort, pretty weak story first written in early 1990s that because of the subject matter (and the cigarette smoking) seems incredibly dated now. But there are well written moments that show this novelists future promise. I wonder when fiction ceases to be "contemporary" and becomes "historical."

I usually love ruth wind/ barbara samuels... but for whatever reason I can't get into this one. I think she emphasized to many times how small the hero was and not very attractive ... that just totally threw me off.

An Excellent Read

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story of Lila and Samuel. From the beginning, I could tell it would be full of wonder and danger. I would recommend this book to all my friends.

“He danced the way he made love, with passion and tenderness and spirit, communicating with hands and eyes the most subtle messages, tenderly making up for Lila's awkwardness. In his lashes and his hair, mist clung in tiny diamond drops. She could not take her eyes from him.” 8 likes
“His passion she had expected, even his expertise, for a man of his years would not have been without women. She had even, in the long days of yearning, suspected his tenderness, which led him now to kiss her temples and the inner crook of her elbow with the same attention he gave to her lips and breasts.
What she had not anticipated was that he would be vulnerable as well.”
