Its an OK sort of book that will appeal to those who like fantasy and also those that like parody/humour, but it isn't a great book. Too much of the humour is based on plays on words in the names of people and places (Angnail, Unch Haven, Dol Dupp and many more). There are few actually funny scenes, situations or conversations.

There is a reasonable enough story, a typical fantasy genre quest, but nothing highly orginal in it. The orcs, elves and humans are basically lifted straight off the pages of Tolkein and given a slight twist. Elves, for example, are able to get drunk on sea water, hence their love of the sea. The eponymous hero is suitably heroic and a little naive, he picks up a world weary sidekick along the way who in turn adopts a carnivorous donkey (I know, but please tell the author that) and the hero attracts the attention of a feisty female love interest. Add some convenient magic to make the plot work and which can make the hero do superhuman things and that's just about it, really.

If I had taken this on holiday with me then it would have suited me lying around the swimming pool while I nursed a hangover, but its neither Tolkein nor Pratchett and therefore not a satisfying read.

I did enjoy this book quite a lot. Some great writing but I have to admit parts of it were a little hard going. Mainly the fight scenes. I had to work hard to decide how many stars to give as three stars seemed to low for a book that has a compelling enough story to keep me reading but I have given other books that enjoyed a lot more four stars. If only we could give half stars.

Lots of thought has been given to the characters and they are well fleshed out with the reader always wanting to know what happens to them next so is a pretty good book for that reason alone.

This would have been a much better and funnier book had Mr Bibby not been reacting so strongly against Tolkien. And if he'd read less Pratchett. There are a few interesting touches, but it's hard to discern any original voice with all that going on. Still, it's his first book, and it was amusing in places, so I suspect I'll give him at least one more try.

A fun read...I'm grouping all three books together.

Fortunately while it was also extremely difficult to find the other Ronan's Rescue and Ronan's Revenge, I did manage to collect them from various UK internet sites...Fantastic series!

I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Comedy fantasy is such a hard genre to get right, and because Terry Pratchett was so damn good, he set such a high benchmark for all those that followed. Saying that Bibby has penned a pretty good yarn, with everything a true lover of fantasy fiction will enjoy: A musclebound hero, a feisty heroine, a comedic sidekick, dastardly villain, dragons, orcs, elves, and wizards. The jokes are more chuckle-inducing than laugh out loud, mainly puns or play on words, most of them coming from the "Book of Ulay" a mystical book of myth and lore. (each chapter is preceded by an excerpt from the book, and these are, for the most part, the wittiest parts). It's fun and an easy read.

I read this when it first came out, and finally managed to track down a copy recently my original having been lost to time, this is hands down the funniest book I’ve ever read
The story is fun, dynamic and easy to follow, the characters are easy to identify with and very individual
But it’s the names that are the best bit, years ago my mates and me spent hours in a pub trying to sound out the place/character names to catch the hidden meaning, they are so well thought out and fun it makes the book
Still one of my all time favourite reads ever

Funny in parts, definitely showing its age in others. Lots of references to other fantasy works, mainly the Lord of the Rings and Conan, but also others. If it was much longer I probably wouldn’t have finished it though. I can see why people compare it to Terry Pratchett, but think of it as something like The Colour of Magic - while it was still a straight parody of swords and sorcery, and before he started adding heart and wisdom.

I couldn't put this book down, read it overnight. So funny, just what I was looking for. Going to start the sequel now.
Think I have found my new favourite series.
Was over the moon when a reference in the appendix made me realise the author lives locally.

Awesome. I remember this book made me laugh so much I could not breathe, I cried from laughter, my stomach hurt from the muscle pain. Anyone who knows regular CONAN. Must read!

Oh dear.

As another reviewer put it: "this book follows in the footsteps of Discworld. Except that it forgoes Pratchett's clever use of tropes and idiosyncratic characters to replace them with pop culture references and offensive stereotypes". I couldn't have put it better.

This puntastic book is very poorly written - it reads like an unedited first draft - with crudely modelled characters and a weak, meandering plot that only serves to set up the next cringeworthy parody.

This would have made good fuel for the chimenea had I not bought the Kindle version.

Yes, like the tagline says this book follows in the footsteps of Discworld. Except that it forgoes Pratchett's cleaver use of tropes and idiosyncratic characters to replace them with pop culture references and offensive stereotypes.
