I took Ebbers' novel along to read on an airplane trip across country. Big mistake. It opens to a scene from 30 years ago, as Captain Frank Branden's brother is murdered in Viet Nam, by a man who in the present time is up for the job of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and then immediately launches in Chapter Two into a truly thrilling, very realistic, how do we keep this Boeing 737-200 in the air until we can get it safely on the ground again despite the fact there's 10 by 12 foot hole blown in th ...more

Did I enjoy this book: For the most part.

I have mixed feelings about this book. On the positive side, Mr. Ebbers tells a great story. It’s interesting, entertaining, and easy to read. His characters are likeable and easy to root for. If that’s all you’re looking for in a novel, stop reading now and go buy the book. Enjoy.

But as a reviewer, I have to be a little more discriminating. While I enjoyed the book overall, I got tangled in the weeds of those pesky details that just seemed off t

Frank Braden has done what he loves best - pilot airplanes in order to make a living. A veteran of Vietnam, flying has always been a part of what he's known. There's nothing more soothing than coasting through the air, watching the clouds go by as you transport people to their current destinations. For him, it's a dream come true.

When the flight he's navigating is sabotaged, Frank soon realizes something is amiss. Though he's not quite sure of what's going on, he knows there has to be a suitable

I was given a pdf copy of this book from the author for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions are my own responsibility. This story is really a thriller whodunit, with information and scenes that bounce back to the Vietnam War. The protagonist, Frank Braden is now a commercial pilot, and one with secrets. Those are revealed in tiny bits and pieces as the story unfolds, and we see where the past collides with the present in truly frightening ways; fr ...more

The past is never buried till all participants are dead.
That is what protagonist Frank Braden discovers in the suspense thriller Dangerous Past. A Vietnam veteran turn airline pilot, Braden is en route to Memphis when the plane he is piloting is suddenly damaged by a hole in the plane’s floor. Braden fights to land the plane as everything that could complicate an emergency landing does; one of the engines catches fire while the other is rendered useless. He manages to land safely and is regarded

How desperate somebody should be to plant a bomb in an aircraft filled with passengers just to get one person out of the way? How lucky one should be not just to escape alive from this attack but other repeated attacks? Who wants Airline Captain Frank Braden out of the way before a particular day? What happens on that particular day that Braden should be dead before that? Or Braden really just suicidal as FBI believes him to be? I absolutely love a great mystery/suspense novel that sucks you in and captivates you through to the bitter end. Dangerous Past definitely did just that! And after reading the author info below, I question if this book could be truth or fiction as the author and pilot Frank Braden appear to have much in common. (But that is beside the point, here). The story is fluent and moves along quite nicely, starting with the present day and a bomb being planted in Frank's plane and it's explosion mid air, ...more

I think it was Spider Robinson, who said (in Callahan's Crosstime Saloon) that people should write about things that they know, irrespective of what those things are. I have paraphrased it, of course, what he said was definitely much funnier. I realized how true that was as I read this book. The author's confidence with his own material is striking throughout the book and that makes it unlike most debut novels. The book is a p

Many stories, good & bad, have come out of the Vietnam War. Soldiers carried things with them that were too big to bear. Most probably thought they left the memories in Vietnam. Captain Jack Bender thought that what happened in Vietnam stayed there. It didn’t.
Jack now flies commercial planes. A surgeon for a wife, 2 kids in college, & a dog are his neatly packaged family. Flying a routine flight one fateful night, Jack’s only worry is keeping his marriage fresh. That is, until a giant e

What did Frank Braden do that caused someone to plant a bomb in a plane, purposely leave him unconscious on the railroad tracks, and point a gun right into his face and make it look like he was trying to commit suicide.
Someone definitely had a grudge, but who? And how could Frank prove all of these things were not suicide attempts and get his job back. Could it be someone from his Viet Nam days?

Review of Dangerous Past

“Dangerous Past” is an exciting, hair-raising, thrilling novel written by an author who knows of what he speaks. Pilot Frank Braden, twenty-some years into a mostly fulfilling marriage to a surgeon, thinks that his war service thirty years ago is long past. But Frank doesn’t realize that his Vietnam tribulations are about to intrude with fatal consequences into the present day. Back then, he disbelieved in

What a fast-paced thriller that kept me guessing at every turn! My interest never waned once as I was reading, and I struggled to put it down. Just about the time I thought I had it figured out, the author threw in a curve ball that I did not see coming.

I enjoyed practically every aspect of this book. No sex scenes (yes!), and profanity was minimal--almost not worth mentioning. I sometimes grew tired of all the flash backs, but again, it was not enough to spoil my enjoyment of the book.

Admittedly, the subject matter of Dangerous Past is a little out of my comfort zone. I am not that knowledgeable about the Vietnam War, or its planes and weaponry. I had to run parts of the book past my husband, Art, in order to have him verify or explain them to me.

However, the storyline was fast-paced and adventurous. I enjoyed the mystery and suspense, even had to keep turning the pages just to see if the hero would make it out alive or to find out who was that mysterious homeless man at the

Suspense/Mystery is not my usual genre, but I wanted to challenge myself by going outside my genre box. I must say that I'm glad I did! From the first page, set in the past in Vietnam, you're thrown right into the thick of drama. Someone dies right off the bat and then the second chapter starts with a terrifying explosion on a plane! The suspense and excitement continue with each new chapter. I love the personalities of Frank and his wife Nicole. Under the circumstances, they are able to remain ...more

Soon they will figure it out but is it too late? The story includes this massive web spun from the past during the vietnam war. I paid 99¢ for the Kindle version of this book. I'm wondering if the free and deeply discounted ebooks are such because the publishers save by not paying for editing or proofreading. While the story was OK, it was hard to focus on it because of the complete disregard for spelling, punctuation (quote marks appear purely at random), and even names. In the opening sequence, Jack Braden is suddenly and temporarily referred to as "Phillips," which is not even his alias, it's just random. Later on, FB ...more

Interesting premise for this book - a pilot being framed for a terrorist attack - but the execution doesn't live up to the promise. (Please note: I was provided a review copy of this book.)
I'm all for a good yarn, but too often the author asked us to abandon logic in order to follow him on this adventure. Countless times I found myself saying, "Well, that wouldn't happen." It also seems as if the story was written over a long period of time. Parts of it seem to have been written pre-9/11, while

A prologue starts the book in Vietnam during the height of the war on the battlefield and confused me a little as to where the story was going to go, but as soon as we hit present day in Chapter 1, I was able to start finding the pieces of the puzzle and putting them slowly together. I received a copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. This was a fantastic first novel by Mr. Ebbers. The story toggles between the Vietnam War and Present day. The transition is wonderfully easy to follow as each character recollects portions of their past. The imagery was amazing, and the suspense kept me pulled into the story. Needless to say, I enjoyed this spy thriller so much; this book was very difficult to put down, worthy of a five star rating.

I really didn't expect much from the book as seeing it mostly war, planes, assassins and conspiracy, but I was totally surprised at A. F. Ebber's "Dangerous Past". It just grabs you right from the beginning and doesn't let go until the end. Fast paced, strong characters, historically accuract and pact with action! For a first novel, A. F. Ebber has all the elements of a great thriller.

A fast paced read, I thought the author did a good job in describing action sequences. I felt as if I was experiencing what Frank was experiencing. There were some typos, however I didn't find them distracting. I also liked how the author weaved in historical facts in with the plot. A nice debut novel.

Excellent book. Plot line is believable. The characters make mistakes while trying to determine who is trying to kill them. There are several grammatical errors but they do not detract from the story. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick and entertaining read.
