A hilarious companion series to Monster Musume that includes three bonus monster girl post cards!
Monster Musume: I Heart Monster Girls is a brand new, two-volume manga series starring everyone’s favorite monster girls from the New York Times bestseller, Monster Musume. Monster Musume: I Heart Monster Girls doubles-up on the humor and heart, telling all new, all original stories in four-panel comic strip anthology format, including a short Monster Musume story from Shake-O, creator of Nurse Hitomi’s Monster Infirmary.
Each volume of Monster Musume: I Heart Monster Girls will include a full-color insert, and three bonus full-color, double-sided postcards, each featuring a different monster girl from the series.
When I'm scooping up an armload of manga at my local library, I have a tendency to snatch up titles I haven't read before without even looking at the back cover. I then often read those manga while taking an hour-long walk around my neighborhood, usually reading one in entirety and carrying a back-up or two in my pocket. This book was my only back-up yesterday, which is how I found myself reading over 50 pages of crap. Twenty pages in, when I realized the characters were not being introduced in any meaningful way, I read the back cover and found that this was a spin-off anthology, giving other creators a chance to produce gag strips using characters from a series that I have not read before. Oops. I tried to keep reading to finish out my walk and see if the mother series might be worth checking out. Well, I don't think I've seen a title so obsessed with boobs since Little Annie Fanny. And since I'm no longer a 12-year-old looking through my dad's Playboy magazines, the non-stop stupid boob jokes just ended up trying my patience. Couldn't finish.
While this book is by no means up to par with the main Monster Musume series, it still had its interesting points and quirks. This volume has 14 short stories drawn in the four-panel comic strip format, including a story (and cover art) by SHAKE-O, the author of Nurse Hitomi's Monster Infirmary, as well as a short, one page blip from Okayado himself. The stories are written and drawn by people from the publisher or who work with Okayado on the main series, not general fan-fiction. Most of the stories are bland, with the occasional very funny or worth-while read.
Do not buy this at full price at the store, because it is not worth that. But it on Amazon for half the cover price. The catch with this series is that each volume comes with....THREE MONSTER MUSUME COLLECTOR'S POST CARDS! These are very beautiful drawings by Okayado and worth the purchase for die-hard collectors, but still not worth 12.99 + tax just for three illustrated cards. I am still debating whether or not to continue to buy these just to have in my collection, but the post cards sure make it tempting!
While not as good as the main series, I heart Monster girls is still quite enjoyable. The one-page punchline format works in most instances and I love that these are all side stores done by, essentially, fans of the main series. However, I would not recommend this to anyone who hasn't read some portion of the original first due to some of the jokes and situations being predicated on things that happened and are written with the understanding you have prior knowledge of each character.
I picked this one up by mistake as I meant to pick up the first volume in the main series. This is a collection of short stories and I didn't find it to be very appealing.
This is a series of four-panel strips by various (mostly doujin) authors based on Okayado's Monster Musume Vol. 1. Cute, but really only for fans of the main manga.
