A wonderful overview of Hesse’s works, focusing on their themes and relation to the romanticist and the modernist viewpoints. Being firmly rooted in the tradition of German romanticism, Hesse transcends this particularity to reach for something more universal and global, not merely Eurocentric or Euroatlantic. A determined individualist, a dedicated artist, a devoted spiritual seeker and finder, Hermann Hesse nevertheless offered in his later works a new utopian vision for intellectual pursuits and their place in society. It emphasizes the indivisibility of knowledge and life, of mind and body, of the past and the future.
