About the author

Michael Reaves is an Emmy Award-winning television writer and screenwriter whose many credits include Star Trek: The Next Generation, Twilight Zone, Batman: The Animated Series, and Gargoyles. His novels include the New York Times bestseller STAR WARS: Darth Maul- Shadowhunter and STAR WARS: Death Star. He and Neil Gaiman cowrote Interworld. Reaves has also written short fiction, comic books, and background dialogue for a Megadeth video. He lives in California.

My reading experience in terms of Michael Reaves’ works had been minimal before I had endeavoured to read this book, produced by Centipede Press befitting their high standards, further bejewelled by an Introduction from Joe R Lansdale, and by an Afterword from John Pelan. The book took a very long time to be read because of only one reason: the combination of rich & rolling words and an exhausted mind turned out to be dangerously soporific every night I tried reading the book. But that DOESN’T mean that the stories contained herein are boring or overlong. It simply means that you need to be at the top of your game when you take a dip in this pool of red & black.

The stories, some short, some very long, can be classified into the following categories:
(a) Outright Pulp Horror/Sci-fi
(b) Slow-burning Horror
(c) Introspective Pieces of Horror.
I can only repeat the list of stories here, leaving you to classify the stories into above-mentioned categories after you have read them, as well as to create some new terms for some of them that I had found to be genre-breaking: -

Many of these stories are highly enigmatic & literary pieces that leave enough ambiguity in a reader’s mind that such ‘pulpy’ pieces are NOT supposed to. But those amongst you who wish to have your horror rather noirish, and NOT quite cut & dried, would enjoy this book.

An amazing collection of stories from an author that some have never heard of. If you have a chance to read any of his works, check him out. The Tearing of Greymare House is among one of my favorites.
