A Horse named Dog

A sweet story that made me smile and laugh. I enjoyed the lessons of kindness and forgiveness sprinkled throughout as well.

I quite enjoyed the book. The story of Sam overcoming his fears and judgements to become a better person is a feel good story that runs a good pace with a simple concept.

A lot of ideas are explored, growing up, dealing with fears, overcoming bad experiences, working hard, understanding animals,... There is a lot to this book.

My only complaint would be how childish the parent child banter is. It felt odd and just didn't sit right. But then again, that might be a grownup talking, children might

As a horse lover and owner I was excited to read this book. While there were some mistakes made about horses, and the writing just seemed disjointed, I feel children will definitely enjoy this story, especially quirky, silly Dog. A book about growing up and learning and who you are and can be.

This is a great read for anyone who enjoys stories starring a determined horse who determined but has some really strange quirks - like wagging his tail and generally behaving like the animal after which it is named, a Dog! Dog comes to the family farm to be broken and trained and immediately takes a liking to twelve year old Sam. However, Sam was with his Mum when a horse went out of control and attacked them both. He actually saved his Mum from further injury but she’s been severely injured. ...more

Horses, dogs, what's not to like? Well, technically there are no dogs IN the story.
It a love story about a quirky horse affectionately called Dog who was raised around some goofy, playful dogs. Formally the horse's name is Dogs of War and he was bred to be a successful race horse.

However, as I said, this is a story for younger readers, late elementary to middle school.
It is a coming of age story, both for a horse and for the boy who does not want to grow attached to him. There are some dangerous
