It’s not a story you forget. It’s been years since I first read it, and I was surprised by how many details I still remembered.
The biggest impression it left on me as a child was adventure! The whole idea of God rescuing someone from the center of a Communist Rebel-held jungle, and using a plane with no fuel in it. What could be a better book for an imaginative child?
Now, while I’m still amazed and awed at God’s miraculous care for His people that wasn’t the biggest impression this reading made on me. This time, it was the strength and power the Word had throughout the whole incident. Every step of the way, every participant drew on scripture they were either reading or had known before. It so greatly encouraged me to know my Bible better and work on memorizing it.
It’s a simple read. I think I was about 11 or 12 the first time I read it, and certainly enjoyed it. I would actually recommend it for every age, but especially children. Let them grow up knowing what great things our Lord does for those that trust Him in every age.

My wife received a copy of this years ago when she served at a Christian summer camp. There, she met Paul Dye, who wrote inside: "May this account always remind you that God is at the controls. 1 Peter 4:19".

1 Peter 4:19
"Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator."

"God At The Controls" does not dive very deeply into doctrine or terminology, but is instead a real account of some very amazing people who relied on God and were not disappointed. We are left with, among other things, a lesson that even if things do not work out as we'd like in the end, it is a part of God's plan.

Complete with great pictures to accompany the story, you should be left with a very clear impression that God is indeed at the controls.
