Alex Benedict is a student of magic in his third year at Hartbridge University with no clear direction for his studies. That is, until he puts himself in the middle of a criminal investigation by literally stepping in it.

This is the story of Alex's first case with Agent Murielle Lapointe, and while it's lacking in romance, it's a delightful look into grumpy young Alex and

This short story should really be labeled like Consulting Magic, 0.5 since it takes place in Alex's 3rd year of Magic College. It is the story of how he and Lapointe met and how he ended up consulting on one of her cases. It was a lot of fun seeing Alex in his younger and awkward years, the story is interesting, with lots of food (he's a growing magic user after all) as well as plenty of the humor the author imbues into her writing. I really really liked it! ...more

I read The Courtship of Julian St. Albans a while ago so I'm not sure how much I missed by forgetting some details and not reading the 2nd book in the series, but I love Alex so I really had fun with his origins story :) ...more

This is a short tidbit out of a larger franchise by Ms Crook.
It is a light and pleasant read which confirms the value of the whole series despite some minor qualms that here do not spoil the fun but in the longer works tend to be noticeable.

Apparently this is a sneak peek of back history of the series. No romance here, but a nice murder mystery in a college of magical students. Nice read.

Really promising little short about Alex, a mage, who stumbles into a murder investigation. I love that he's one of those types that gets very submersed in his work and misses what's going on around him. It was also funny that for such a short story, he ate so much. I haven't read anything else in the series (only realized it was a series after I finished), but this makes me more interested in it. ...more

Clever Student Magician

Delightful short mystery to start a magical mystery series. A clever student of magic helps the police catch a killer. Strong world building and likeable characters. I bought my copy so I’ll be able to read it again when it moves off kindle unlimited.

Tried this one first before reading the first full novel of this series, and I was hooked! I liked the MC and the female detective (what a surprise, right?); the setting looked interesting, and the writing was also fine.

This is the first work I've read in this series. It was described as something of a prequel, and it does, in fact, stand nicely on its own. It has also piqued my interest in the series. I'll definitely be reading more in the near future. ...more

Perfect is the word. I love all of Amy's books and especially this series so getting to read about how it all started, and just what a dork Alex has always been awesome.

A thoroughly enjoyable glimpse into Alex’s past. Agent Lapointe is probably my second favourite character after Alex in this series. Their interactions are highly amusing. To be honest, I’d joyfully read stories just about them solving cases together. The rest is a bonus. (though a very very welcome bonus indeed)
