Okay, sure, so I contributed a story to this, and usually I try not to give stars to my own work. But I'm just one little six page story in a collection of eighteen tales of the macabre, the black-hearted, the salacious, the hilarious, the beasterotic, and the bone-chilling, each illustrated with a beautiful piece of original artwork to complement the respective story. I'd be doing friends and fellow readers a disservice not call your attention to this collection (and the previous volume) where ...more

I received this book as part of the Goodreads First Reads Program for the purpose of a fair review.

Overview: Hey monster-tale lovers, if you like reading about some of the cryptids of North America, then you’ll be happy to run across this book. We get eighteen stories from the United States cryptids. Let’s not try to guess how many stories are about Bigfoot.

Fantastic collection. Super varied tones between stories—but all possessing the same reverence and love for their monsters—make this just a goddamn pleasure to read.

There were many enjoyable short stories in here for those who like folktale style horror. The tales are told in the authentic sounding voice of the area they are from. The variety of authors made reading interesting as the styles changed. In particular, I liked Friends with the Moon, a mothman tale, told in his voice; Different Monsters, where the man proved to be more of a monster; Night Tour, which tells of a thankless and scary summer job in a unique format; but my most favorite may be Batsqu ...more
