The cars all still run but can't seem to leave town. Beatty writes words on the page like she's carving faces into giant logs with a chainsaw. The words are spare, the writing sometimes harsh, but the phrases and people are bent and surprising, and the emotions evoked can be extreme. These stories are strong, and magical. It's a must read chapbook from a must read press.

I love this collection. Gwen has a captivating writing voice and I can't tell if the stories are true or not. Looking forward to more.

This tiny book is just enough to whet the appetite. Gwen Beatty is good and I look forward to reading more.

I really loved this book. Gwen's voice and writing style are entirely unique, and others below have better described her stories. It's almost magical realism, but darkly sparse in its prose. She can pull off more character development in a few pages than many writers can in an entire novel. Highly Recommended.
