The book is about a 12-year-old girl who is dealing with an ailing father. She and he family are relocated to the unfamiliar city where she meets new friends. She is faced with adversity and moral dilemma over the course of the year she spends in the city. She is conflicted with dealing with reality and hiding in her imagination and lies. Storytellers taps into the everyday concerns of middle school students, but it also tackles some heavy duty issues at the same time, and the combination of the everyday and the tragic helps the protagonist (and the reader) to make sense of issues that are difficult to grasp.
