Unseen Enemy #7

Solid Heart

Rate this book
Five years ago, Doctor Francine Cabot left Canada, looking for a new start. She moved to Denver, and she now dedicates her life to helping women and children move beyond trauma that they’ve suffered at the hands of men. She’s smart, and strong, and has more than a hint of sass – and all of that makes her undeniably attractive to two men. One is safe and steady; the other one most definitely is not.

Mark Hayden is a former trauma doctor, former battle surgeon, now a bodyguard and Number Two at Solid Security. He’s dedicated his life to protecting and helping others, and he makes it his mission to step in between danger and anyone threatened by it. He’s interested in Francine – every inch of his muscular, hulking frame is interested – but she’s in someone else’s sights, too. Someone not nearly as safe as Mark, someone who wishes her serious harm.

When Francine disappears in to a blizzard, taken by a man that she helped to put in jail years before, Mark’s instinct is to find her at all costs. As Mark races against time, his search for the woman that he loves will mean pushing his boundaries, both personal and professional. If he blows past those boundaries, and he takes a life out of revenge and rage, will he be able to come back to himself? And if that lonely mountain cabin becomes Francine’s final resting place, will he even care if he never comes back?

The author has once again given me two instantly likeable characters that I connected with right off the bat. Mark was alpha hotness when he needed to be, patient and understanding when that was called for and I think one of my favourite heroes of the series. Francine was tough, sensible and open. Actually they both were open and straight about their feelings with no ridiculous misunderstandings, the TALKED to each other and LISTENED to each other. There was insta-lust, but the author really makes this work.

This, together with a strong suspense plot running through as well as a catch up with the characters from earlier books made for another fabulous read. Marysol James has fast become one of my favourite authors.

This was a quick read that in no way felt rushed, the pace is perfect.

My favorite in this series, since I loved Francine and I loved Mark and I loved them together. The action was excellent and Marysol James knows how to build suspense. The sexy-times were HOT and yet so emotional, and the connection between the H and h was far beyond the physical.

Bravo, Ms. James! A triumph!

Disappointing because the H & h started out so likable and promising. Francine, a therapist who focuses on abuse victims/domestic abuse patients has a passing acquaintance with mark, a former military doctor and current bodyguard with Dallas' agency. They bump into each other at a restaurant and have dinner together, sparks fly. She isn't aware that there is a psycho stalking her because she helped his wife and child escape and then helped put him behind bars, more about that later.

***********spoilers***************
The first 'oh you are f-ing kidding me moment' is when Francine gets a call from a patient she fears is in danger from her violently escalating husband. She and Mark take off immediately to help. Do they call the police? Of course not. When they arrive at the house he tells her wait and she says no way I'm coming and he's like "ok, sure". They see the wife tied up and the husband with a gun at her head and she tells Mark she's going to engage the husband and distract him so Mark can untie the wife and get there out of there then come back for her. W-T-F?

The second bonehead thing is when (after a week of dating and one fantastic night together) Francine goes to the safe-house to drop off the wife (Alexandra) she and Mark saved and her stalker follows her. He sees her friend and fellow therapist Emma leaving the house (Emma is 8 months pregnant) and forces her at knife-point to get him into the house. The women inside are horrified (there are monitors in every room for security). Emma goes into labor on the spot (I'm rolling my eyes but that isn't the worst) and Francine tells Alexandra that she is going to distract him and get him to take her (you know where this is going right?) and makes Alexandria swear not to tell Mark until after he safely delivers Emma's baby (again, are you f-ing kidding me?????). So she convinces the villain that she's in love with him to get him to take her with him and to save everyone (martyr-syndrome apparently).
For a 1/3 of the book we're forced to wait for Alexandria to tell Mark that Francine said he needs to find the psycho's ex wife (who is in witness protection) and find out where the psycho's cabin is because she just knows that is where he's taking her. They have to call in another guy who has to call a friend in Canada who then has to take a plane to see the ex-wife all to find out the cabin is in Vermont.
Now maybe I'm stupid but wouldn't the Canadian authorities been able to just call the ex-wife and ask her? Not to mention the fact that they would have a list of his assets and property since he was incarcerated for 5 years.

Okay so I'll fast forward, she is nearly raped and gets seriously injured but manages to stab him a few times with a corkscrew before the guys burst in to save her. She changes from the strong woman we met at the beginning into an utter air head. Mark, except for the silly lapse in judgement at the beginning is ridiculously sweet.

****************End************************

The only pluses I can give this are that it was free on KU and the scenes including the couples from past books. It was nice to catch up with some of them.

I couldn't wait for Francine and Mark's story! She has helped so many of the other women in this series, many from the other series too, as well as countless others and truly deserves to be happy herself. Mark has only seen her once previously, but couldn't get her out of his mind. When they run into one another by accident again, they're both interested in more, but before anything else can happen she gets an emergency call from a patient and they both go to help her. After quite literally saving her life from her abusive husband, they both stay at the hospital to protect her and comfort each other. They start "dating" and both are falling hard for the other but before it can get too serious, she's abducted by a former patient's ex whom she thought was still in jail. Racing against the clock, Mark and some other guys get the info needed to find her to try and save her. Will they make it in time? Will Mark and Francine ever actually get their HEA? Or will she be too traumatized by the events of her abduction to be able to go forward?
This is a very emotional and traumatic story, not just for the main couple, as there were more involved during the attack and hurt by the ex. During this series, the author has included short chapters in each book that included the other couples from this series and their progress in their relationships. Because of this, if you've read the previous books, it gives you the full story of all the couples without it having to be explained in this book. This story has a fast and steady flow, some violence, lots of suspense, fear and heartache, amazing characters whom you've come to love, and several twists that will keep you wanting more. The writing is exceptional and is definitely one of the best of this series.
I strongly recommend this book and series to everyone who loves a great romance.

Finally Marysol gives us a classic "damsel in distress" book, but since this is Marysol, it's got a twist! The twist is our heroine, Francine, a woman who doesn't sit in the castle and wait for her hero to rescue her. I mean Mark does save her (sigh and swoon as the hot alpha man kicks down the door) but she 90% saves herself using her brains and her guts.

And I loved catching up with the others, especially Emma and Dean. Sigh and swoon again.

Mark and Francine: Solid Heart

This couple is one of my favorites of the Unseen Enemy Series. Love, love, love Mark and Francine together. Two beautiful, smart, strong people who are both so selfless, open, and caring...they don't hesitate for a moment to do what needs to be done for others, or for each other; even in the face of danger. These two proved time and time again that they're made for one another. Another awesome story and sexy romance by Marysol James. 😍

Once again another fab read in this series.
I loved Mark he was an alpha with a patient, caring side. Francine was so strong and endured a lot to keep everyone else safe. What I really like about this series is the fact we don’t get any TSTL heroines, they are all strong women.

Ms. James has returned to top form. The last bookof the series I read was good but not outstanding. This effort was back in the "super" range. Good plot, interesting characters, plus the sexual tension was back to normal levels. Enjoyed the romantic ups and downs. I look forward to the last book of the series.
