About the author

Jane Yolen was a novelist, poet, fantasist, journalist, songwriter, storyteller, folklorist, and children’s book author who wrote more than three hundred books. Her accolades include the Caldecott Medal, two Nebula Awards, the World Fantasy Award, three Mythopoeic Awards, the Kerlan Award, two Christopher Awards, and six honorary doctorate degrees from colleges and universities in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Born and raised in New York City, the mother of three and the grandmother of six, Yolen lived in Massachusetts and St. Andrews, Scotland.

A wonderful children's book about the ecology of a tropical rain forest. Focusing on the plants and animals of the rain forest and written in an easy-to-read poetic style, this would teach young readers so much about life in the tropical rain forest. Laura Regan did an amazing job with the pictures on each page which are filled with interesting things for a young reader to learn.

I think this would be a good book to read for a Social Studies lesson on saving rain forests. This book describes in detail about a rain forest. Not only does it discuss about the plants that live in a rain forest, but it also discusses the animals that live in the rain forest. This book stresses the point that we need to protect our rain forests from being cut down. I think it would be a good lesson to show children what types of living things are being killed when people destroy our rain forests and it will hopefully help them to do their part and speak up on behalf of saving our rain forests.

Welcome to the Greenhouse by Jane Yolen and illustrated by Laura Regan
This is a wonderful informational scientific book. This book can be read to K-3 grade level and they will love the story especially the illustrations as the animals are blended in with the plants. This book is a must see and read for all children and adults.It is a picture book that kids can look at the pictures and learn about the rainforest animals.I love how colorful the pictures are and how well the story flows when you read it. The pictures and the imagery is lively and vivid! The author explores a tropical rain forest in an inviting rhyming poem with language full of images.

Take a tour of the rainforest, it's sights and sounds, through Yolen's free verse poetry and Regan's brilliant illustrations.

This would be a great introduction to a rainforest unit or part of a biomes unit. Yolen's poetic text flows and draws you into experiencing the sights, sounds and feels of the rainforest. The illustrations are incredible and are so rich in detail they require more than one look. Even though this book is over 20 years old now, it is not dated.

Beautiful pictures, along with a story of the animals and plants that live within our rainforests, serve to impart the importance of saving them to our children. The final page of the story even provides more information on the dangers of deforestation and we can be a part of ending it.
