My love for everything and anything concerning summertime - the beaches, the weather, the freedom - is unlike anything other. I've had it instilled in me since childhood and it's not going away anytime soon.
But since I began browsing through this gorgeous book at the end of January, aka the coldest month where I live, it made me ache so dearly for all the aforementioned. In particular, that irreplaceable sensation of swimming in the ocean, even if I still make sure to walk down to the beach and breathe in that unique hit of saltwater every day. Beaches will make you reminisce about the summers filled with nostalgia, bliss, and laughter.
So I made sure to savor the collection until the weather would warm up, and lo and behold, flipping through this ethereal photography collection must've brought some good luck into my life because the weather is sure warming up a lot this week! We’re so close to summer where I live, and I’m bursting with anticipation.
I think it goes without saying that a book dedicated to capturing different beaches around the world was a shining, bright star for me. Gray Malin's Beaches offers an extremely rare and unique experience by including aerial photographs of beaches around the world that are shot from doorless helicopters.
I also adored the fact that if you get the digital version of the book, you can zoom in on the picture and spot people looking up at you. It’s like the summer version of Where's Waldo?.
Without further ado, here are some of my personal favorites shots taken from Beaches:
SECRET BEACH Saint-Tropez, France
DUBAI BEACH UMBRELLAS Dubai, UAE
BEACH WITH GRASS Kaua’i, USA
I will be sure to revisit this work of art many times in the future, especially come summertime!

I absolutely loved this phenomenal art/photography book! It was like an "I spy" book with everything that you could see from the beaches and the air above's perspective. I thought it was going to be a typical "art/photography" book where you just flip through the pages but this one is definitely unique. There's tons of activities to spot happening on the beaches below and lots of people watching to enjoy. It's pages are filled with beautiful pictures with and without filters showing the beaches at different times of day and in different lighting and perspectives. It's really great that the photographer took the time to explain his shots and which shot is which. I also loved the insider tips and tricks for visiting each place that the pictures captured and where and what to do while being there. I got to see around the world in a few pages and it was magnificent and fun. My favorite pages were of the Hamptons and of the private beaches that can only be shot from the air.
For general beach "eye candy" this book is beautiful. Turns out the author has a love of colorful beach umbrellas, just as I have for seashells and beaches. The Author/photographer put together a delightful book of overhead helicopter pictures he took all over the world. (I envy him a wee bit for all of the beaches he's seen.) Perfect coffee table book.
Pictures taken from a helicopter of beaches all over the world. I was struck by the geometric unity of so many of the beach umbrellas: almost looked as if you were looking inside a body and the people and umbrellas were different cells. Would love to visit some of the beaches in this book - just have to keep playing the lottery!
Definitely a cool concept, and the occasional strong photo, but not the strongest photobook I've read. Seemed that a lot of the photos weren't the sharpest/highest resolution, probably because he took them from a moving airplane/helicopter.
Fantastic places to dream of! Photos are so unique and need to be studied! Different kind of view from a helicopter - straight down!! Makes me want to go to South Africa!!!
maybe I did not read the description of the book before I checked it out, but it was not what I was hoping for. Too many of the same image in different locals, lots of bird's eye views that displayed rows and rows of umbrellas....kinda boring....
