In this third James Pruett Mystery, the hero is faced with the biggest challenge of his life: saving the life of an even larger hero. Honor Land is a gritty, emotional story of patriotism, multiple murders, a hero Delta Force veteran, Kyle Yoder, who doesn't understand himself any longer, much less whether or not he is capable of the brutal crimes for which he is charged. James Pruett and his team will have to uncover the answers if they are to keep Yoder from a guilty verdict and a mandatory execution by lethal injection. In the tradition of Dennis Lehane, Tony Hillerman and James Lee Burke, Guthrie's sparse, haunting storytelling compliments his talent for creating richly-drawn, unflinching law officers with human frailties, a code of honor, and a profound sense of justice.

Seems Abbreviated

I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in this series, but this one seemed to be cut short. Just about the time the story got interesting the bad guy appeared and confessed. There was supposed to be a fourth book with these main characters, but I can’t find it.

A Story with a Conscience; A Story of Love--
The book opens by thrusting you right in the midst of a murder mystery. And, as in true R.S. Guthrie form, he begins adding the layers to the story from there. It isn’t long before you find yourself immersed in the history and culture of the west, where the author merges the past and present in brilliant fashion; all while weaving around you the lives of the characters so well, you feel you’ve known them their whole life. One of this author's natural abilities is to let you pick up this third book in the series and, if you haven’t read either of the preceding novels, allows you to be able to read the story without feeling as if you're missing part of it or that you’ve been left out, but rather excited you get to go back and read more of the characters….because the characters are not superficial. They have depth and humanity that only a life’s history told in part in each book can create. I don’t want to give any spoilers, it’s not my style, but I do want to touch on the basis behind "Honor Land", and that being that it’s closely related to those that place their lives on the line every single day in the line of duty to their country. R.S. Guthrie, in "Honor Land", shows you what it takes to become a part of the Delta force and to live and think as one of these proud soldiers. When you turn the last page, and recount the story from beginning to end, you can't help but feel the plethora of love the pages told - for our servicemembers, for family, for loyalty, and for justice - a story you lived through and that is now a part of you. If you’re a fan of descriptive surroundings, of dialogue, of depth-—mystery, action and surprise endings, you’ll want to read it, and then read it again because you won’t want it to end.

Novice writers are often advised to 'write about what you know'. The art of storytelling, the twists and turns of plot, creating bellievable characters, and crafting surprises that you did not see coming are as much a part of Rob Guthrie's stock in trade as an artist magicing startling images onto a blank canvas.

As soon as you pick up Honor Land you know that his words on paper are a direct reflection of Rob Guthrie the man as well as Rob Guthrie the writer. You know he shares the core values of Sheriff James Pruett that are the patriotic values someone who has served his country. Honor Land pays tribute from the heart to all who have served.

The exciting thing is that Honor Land has closed some doors and opened new ones with the tantalising prospect of future adventures in storytelling. I hope that the sound I'm hearing is the distant tapping of a keyboard.

This is one of the best series I have enjoyed.

I truly love these three books by R.S. Guthrie. The main character, James Pruett, is wonderful. A black man living in a small white western town who has earned everyone's respect by serving all the people with honor and common sense. I have loved the quotes before each chapter and among the text. I felt I was there, along for the ride.

I enjoyed the first two books in the series so much I saved this third book for a little while to read when I wanted a guaranteed, great read. And it was. Great characters, great plot, you can "see" the outdoors and Guthrie ties it all together into a very enjoyable read that you will not want to put down.

I liked this!

This story reminded me of Lee Child's "Reacher" series.
I grew up in Greeley so the Wyoming setting was very pleasing to me, and I really enjoyed this book.
Job well done!

Great Read!

Love the sheriff Pruitt character. Must admit I was shocked when he was voted out as sheriff. Finished Blood Land and went right to this book next. I can hardly put them down! Please keep writing. Just realized I missed the second book, oh well, these books are great!
