A strong, very informative summary of a period of American history less discussed outside of the highlight reel of witchcraft, the Mayflower, King Phillips' War, and the French and Indian war. There was an enormous amount of social transformation and economic change. This became prounced within a few generations, and the value of the land, America split between England, France and Spain all at war with each other gave third generation British-Americans ideas of self-reliance and self-government.
There were many incidents a history geek like me knew nothing about, and Ver Steeg's analysis (if not his prose stylings) makes interesting, seemingly valid points about both the time in question, and the evolution of historical debates on the era leading up to this book's publication in 1964.
This would make an excellent class book, as I'm sure that once upon a time it was, for a course in colonial history. Very highly recommended should this be a time and place you wish to explore.
