What a pleasant surprise this book is. After having read A Reason to Kill, I was not very disposed to read any of its sequels, but I’m very glad I finally went back and did so. The difference is so pronounced it is almost as if Zaremba spent the 8 years between the first and second books getting to know her main character. The first published out lesbian detective novel. 1986. Supposedly the first. I’m pretty sure Katherine Forrest was already publishing hers. I had a hard time remembering this was set in the 80s. The writing felt more like the 40s. The dialogue chunks were way too chunky, the character not solid enough, and the story was kind of confusing because the other characters were not fleshed out. But I did read it all the way through.
