Many of the essays in the CAMBRIDGE COMPANION TO books take readers beyond the expected facts to new insights. Too few of the essays in this volume do. Most of the essays are mere rehashes of what everyone who works in the field knows, and mostly written in an uninspired way. This does not mean there is no value for complete novices, but this series usually gives readers more so it is a disappointment judged by the standard of this series.
