What struck me about this book is how utterly passive the characters are. Woman's husband dies and she sinks into a deep depression? Others take care of her family while she sleeps it off for a few months. Girl's boyfriend pushing too far? I read this in one sitting, which meant i was intrigued enough i couldn't walk away.

I liked the first half better than the concluding half. When Lydia's father dies she is very young. She is small for her age and constantly battles name-calling at school. Also, a family friend moves in. This new girl, Michelle, is fighting anorexia. She and Lydia fight their individual problems while finding friendship in each other. It was disturbing because Michelle was constantly smoking and they used God's name a lot. However, it was a well-written book and would be helpful to someone in either of the situations these girls faced.

Full disclosure: I actually taught with the author at Grand Valley State University in the early eighties, so I picked up the book then and really liked it a lot.
