Great
characters with vivid descriptions plus an
interesting plotted story set in Belarus.
Belarus is still holds to the old fashion custom
that women do not belong in holding a man’s
job or to have a say in politics.
Cecile Lornier, an ambitious chemist won the
position of Program Manger of Belarus to set
up a Chemical Lab to clean the air and soil
from the aftermath of the Chernobyl fallout.
Her boss to be Major General, Sergei Fedorin
did not expect a woman especially one like
Cecile.
A very well plotted, interesting read.

To Love a Hero isn't your typical contemporary romance. The alpha male hero doesn't comes across as an arrogant jerk and the heroine isn't in need of saving.

Dr. Cecile Lornier is an ambitious chemist who fought hard to win and keep her first international contract.

She has money, respect and power but inside, she's not as self-confident as people believe. And she isn't as staid and serious either. She wants love AND respect. But the major general of Belarus isn't used to dealing with women or taking orders. The widowed Sergei just wants to clean his country of the pollution left by the Chernobyl disaster. But Sergei and Cecile soon find themselves in a tangled web of love, lies, and deceit.

This story is the most unique contemporary romance I've ever read. For starters, it's set in Belarus. I know Russia was a US Allie in both World Wars, but in the cinema, Russians are usually the bad guys. And the antagonist in To Love a Hero fits the typical Russian villain to a "T." Except, Ms. Risk clearly outlines his motivations so he's not a super villain. He's believable. And Sergei reminds me a bit of Arnold Schwarzenegger in the move Red Heat. Sergei is powerful and confident, but he's not rich and never will be. He's in the army and totally dedicated to his country and his cause.

Cecile is ambitious. She wants to make a name for herself and prove she doesn't need a man's help to get the job done. But inside she's vulnerable. And Sergei is lonely and tired of living for his country.

I read the first few chapters of this book at a sedate pace. A few pages each night before going to bed. Then I got to the big black moment and the climax and couldn't put it down. I stayed up until two in the morning because I had to know how it ended.

Sergei and Cecile were in love--a forbidden love that could ruin their careers. Sergei realized he needed more in his life than duty and Cecile realizes she can ask for a man's help without losing her independence. But how would they overcome all those external obstacles? I just couldn't see how it would be possible. But somehow, Ms. Risk found a resolution that was both believable and satisfying. I loved it.

Dr. Cecile Lornier is a woman not a man which upsets the staid businessmen of Belarus. Their plans of setting up the old Belchem Chemical Laboratory are complicated and Cecile had to fight very hard against her old fiancé and the politicians back home to convince them that she was the right person to take on this job. That her ambition is powerful enough for her to handle any opposition. Once she arrives in Minsk and meets the handsome General Sergei, he puts her on the spot. He begs her help in cleaning up the environment after the Chernobyl incident, which produces cancers in his country that takes the lives of so many, including his ex-wife, and she can't say no. She can't say no to the attraction that flares between them either and the road gets very slippery for her and her future. There's secrets uncovered, tender love scenes, and great characterization that makes this a wonderful read.
