I read this aloud to my six-year-old as part of her homeschool study of ancient civilizations, and my four-year-old listened in. Historical connections aside, it was a really fun story for both girls, and they loved it.

This is a wonderful tale about what truly matters in life. We really enjoyed reading this story together and I loved the illustrations and the brief glimpse into ancient Persian culture. I also really liked the additional information provided at the end of the story.

This folktale is set in Persia of old, where a king recieves so many presents and gifts that he becomes tired of the lavish gifts and yerns for a drink of water, which he realizes is the most precious gift of all.

This was a great folktale about King Artexerxes and his vast, rich palaces. The lesson: money doesn't buy happiness? Or perhaps not to take for granted the simple things in life that can be immensely rewarding and fulfilling.
