John Ford's Oscar-winning The Quiet Man, based on the story by Maurice Walsh, is one of the most popular Irish films of all time. Every aspect of the film is celebrated in this unique guide-the background, the stars, the shooting, the screenplay, the influences, and the many legends and stories that have grown up around it. Covered here are the film's shooting locations with detailed maps; a comprehensive cast and crew list, including background about the electric partnership of Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne; hundreds of previously unseen photographs taken by amateurs and professionals; and video timings of the scenes.
I picked up this book while on a recent trip to Ireland. I enjoyed the book for the most part and certainly the author deserves kudos for the research and detail provided.
That said I was a bit put off by what I felt were certain self serving parts of the book by said author. Also, the complaints about certain actors ability (or lack thereof) to perform a truly Irish Accent while perhaps accurate were belabored much more than necessary. The same can be said of the comments regarding scenes filmed on location versus those filmed on the studio lot. Of course the scenes in Ireland were more beautiful, it doesn't need to be commented on over and over again.
With this in mind, I would still recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the film. Yes, it can be tedious, but you will come away with information and knowledge that you likely wouldn't possess without reading this book.
