Lone Pine Pride #5

Tangling with the Tiger

Rate this book
It might be love. If they don’t kill each other first.

Siberian tiger-shifter Dominec Giroux doesn’t play well with others. Horribly scarred by the Organization scientists who killed his family and tried to turn him into their pet assassin, his sanity has been hanging by a thread ever since his escape.

His one reason for living—revenge. But when he snaps during one of the shifters’ strikes against the Organization and goes on a killing spree, it doesn’t go over so well with his pride mates.

As the only female lieutenant in Lone Pine Pride history, Grace Calaveras has a lot to prove, and a lot on her plate. The last thing she needs to deal with is Dominec’s brand of crazy, but until she can get him under control, she’s his babysitter.

It would take a miracle for these two to find common ground, but when they’re sent on a mission that could impact the future of every shifter in the world, lioness and tiger form an uneasy alliance…and unleash an attraction that could be their salvation. If it doesn’t destroy them both.

Warning: This book contains a scarred, brooding tiger with an unconventional approach to romance, a feisty, flirty lioness who doesn’t know how to quit, love triangles, secret missions, and rooftop kisses hot enough to melt the Montana snow.

If I had it to do all over again, I probably would not have requested this book through Netgalley. I expected a lot more action and considerably less romance/sex. My mistake, so I really can't complain. This book is what it is and succeeds tremendously in what it sets out to accomplish.

Although, Tangling With the Tiger: Lone Pine Pride, is book five in an ongoing series, it works very well as a stand-alone novel.

"Warning: This book contains a scarred, brooding tiger with an unconventional approach to romance, a feisty, flirty lioness who doesn't know how to quit, love triangles, secret missions, and rooftop kisses hot enough to melt the Montana snow."

The central characters in Tangling With the Tiger are lioness, Grace Calaveras, the only female lieutenant in Lone Pine Pride history and Dominec Giroux, a French-Canadian Siberian tiger with deep issues after spending five years as a prisoner of the Organization.

The basic story has to do with efforts of the Lone Pine Pride to garner support among other prides of shapeshifters to launch an offensive against the Organization and put an end to the threat to their existence. There are some entertaining moments, even some occasional snark from Grace, which I did enjoy, but although this is a story about shapeshifters, it is much more a romance novel than a horror book.

Well-written and, no doubt enjoyable for its target audience, Tangling With the Tiger, was not really my cup of tea.

Tangling With the Tiger is available now, both in paperback and e-book formats, and published by Samhain Horror.

Tangling with the Tiger follows a similar timeline to a previous installment, Hawk's Revenge; some of the events in both overlap. In this installment, the Pride's Task Force is making planned assaults on Organization facilities in an effort to not only free shifter captives but also capture Organization personnel to gain more knowledge about their operation.

Dominec Giroux, a French-Canadian Siberian tiger shifter, has been living with the Lone Pine Pride for two years. Since he's been living with versus becoming a part of the Pride no one really knows much about him aside from the fact that the left side of his face is badly scarred and he has a wicked temper. He prefers to hide in the shadows. Recently though, the Hawk-shifter Adrian Sokolov arrived with data on the Organization and now Dominec is insisting he be a part of the Task Force.

Because Roman, the Pride's Alpha, has reservations about sending Dominec, the tiger [with] a shit-ton of crazy flowing through his veins, on the mission Grace has accepted responsibility for him. Grace Calaveras is the first and only female Lieutenant in the Pride as well as the medic. Her life is busy and can be dangerous, but she prefers it that way. She's a strong lioness who can take care of herself, something her family struggles to understand. She's not afraid of the big bad Siberian tiger. In fact, to everyone's dismay, she finds herself drawn to him instead of the easygoing, laid-back lion who wants to date her.

I enjoyed this installment in the series and look forward to more to come. Vivi Andrews has done a great job of progressing the story as well as growing her characters.

The best book in the entire series! I seriously liked this entire series and was deliriously happy that Vivi Andrews increased her book length for this series, excluding Jaguar's Kiss. I freaking loved Dominec and the way he reacted to Grace. His emotional turmoil and even the way he speaks to Grace was freaking brilliant. Just excellent. If you love shifter romances with real not cheesy emotion, pick up this series. Just awesome.

Mentally Dom has a way of thinking that really steered me through the entire book and even with his need to consume and put his mark on everything including Grace it wasn't the way it seemed but a more desperate way of holding onto something when you feel like you're going to lose it. I felt bad for him and I liked that Grace had just the right amount of determination to see things through with him. Tangling with the Tiger is adventurous, its sexy and just the right amount of dangerous to hook you in. Great ending to series. If all books in series had been like this one then the series would have been great for me instead of good. This book kept me interested from start to finish. Grace and Dominec finally get their book. Great writing, hot moments,a few surprises thrown in for good measure. Grace is a hard nosed shifter lieutenant for the Lone Pine Pride, while Dominic is the resident crazy psychopath who realizes Grace is the only one who can keep his crazy at bay. While trying to figure out how to take down the Organization that is abducting shifters Grace and Dominec learn how to keep each other sane .

Oh, this was good. I really enjoyed this latest installment from the Lone Pine Pride series, with its fierce heroine and thoroughly haunted hero. It’s only my second book in this setting (after the novella, Unbearable Desire) but I followed along pretty well considering most of the characters and plots were new to me – so if you’re new to this shifter world but are intrigued by the setting, go for it.

Grace is a Strong Female Character in the best possible way. She’s not just a soldier in her pride, she’s a lieutenant, possibly the first female one ever, and she’s willing to work hard and do whatever she can to protect her people. Although I wasn’t sure why women hadn’t taken on such a role before – since wild African lionesses are far from passive – I did like the way Grace handled herself. She’s strong and confident and smart, and has grown used to working twice as hard as the men around her to prove herself – even though no one treats her differently because of her gender.

I loved her secure place in the pride and how she was valued by her peers – in the same way that I appreciated her troubles with her family. Her mother’s attitude to the threat… wow, just wow. I could see why Grace turned out the way she did and worked so hard to prove herself. I wasn’t always impressed by the way she handled things romantically – the Kelly situation unfolded in a predictable and slightly annoying style – but I could see why certain viewpoints got under her skin and made her confused, considering how hard she’s trying to please all people all the time. However, I was impressed with her restraint.

And then along came Dominec. Haunted, dark, unstable, more than a little crazy – and I loved him. His time with the Organization shattered him and I liked how that manifested in his trouble with memory. Sure, he’s a bit of a stalker at times and he’s definitely not a team player, but I loved how nothing about him is a quick fix. He’s a dangerous, vicious predator who has serious trust issues, has suffered severe trauma and lives for revenge. Yet he also appreciates Grace for exactly who she is and has a way with words that is completely unintentionally beautiful.

Their romance is unconventional at times, bordering on hurtful at others, full of confusion and misunderstandings, yet somehow builds an incredible team out of the pair of them. Despite all the darkness and doubt and outside stress, they make each other stronger and I loved reading about them.

Tangled up with the romance is the wider plot that’s clearly been building throughout the series so far. The sinister Organization has been stealing shifters and doing terrible things to them for a while, but now Lone Pine are getting ready to fight back. Where Dominec is all for charging in and slaughtering the lot of them, no questions asked, Grace wants to take a more cautious approach – taking prisoners in the hope of gaining more information. These two viewpoints are repeated often throughout the book with other characters as Lone Pine builds towards a full-scale attack and attempts to contact other shifter packs and prides to join the fight.

It’s dark and dangerous stuff at times, with a small amount of political maneouvering and plenty of building tension. The momentum grows steadily throughout in a good, consistent way that I couldn’t see how things could possibly be resolved by the end of the book. As such I did feel that certain things became a little too convenient and a touch rushed, when perhaps they might have been better carried over into another book. Having said that, I can see why it wasn’t since the whole attack itself was pivotal in Dominec’s storyline. I just wish certain things hadn’t popped up at the most convenient moment to make everything swifter than expected.

That little niggle aside, though, I really enjoyed this book. It's a strong shifter romance, and although there was a distinct lack of lioness moments there was plenty of tiger time to make up for it. I loved Dominec, really liked Grace and adored how their romance played out. If you’re looking for a shifter series that blends great characters with stirring romance and an interesting wider plot, then you should give this a try. I know I’ll be catching up on the earlier three books soon, and look forward to wherever this world goes next.

The shifters of the world have been held captive by The Organization for years and used a experiments. Some have escaped and others have died at the hands of the humans within The Organization. Dominec was one of the prisoners, taken against his will after watching the humans kill his wife and young son. He escaped and took refuge among the Lone Pine lion pride – a pride that accepts all kinds of refugees among them. After going on a killing spree during a mission to retrieve shifters from The Organization, Dominec is put on probation. The Pride’s Lieutenant, Grace, is the only one not put off by Dominec’s scarred face. He uses it as a shield against others getting too close. But, Grace sees something in him that no one else does. Grace makes Dominec feel “home” and like a man, so he stalks her and hangs around close to her without her knowing. When the Pride’s safety is compromised by the prisoners from the raid of The Organization escaping, the Alpha puts together a group to head out and talk to an old Wolf Pack. Grace heads the group and take along Dominec, Kelly (a shifter pursing her for mating), and a mated lion pair from another pride). Things get dicey and Dominec becomes very protective of Grace, showing off his true feelings for her. The Pride prepares to infiltrate The Organization before more shifters are taken and killed, while Grace and Dominec figure out whether to fight or escape their attraction to one another.

This was an interesting shifter story. On one hand, the pride has a new young Alpha who is trying to find his way in leading the pride. He has a woman Lieutenant who helps him run things and they take in other shifter species to help them escape from The Organization. There is romance, suspense, and mystery within the story…all things that should make it a great read. However, there was something about the book that caused my attention to drift while reading. It was a little slow paced, so that may be it. But, other than that, it was a good read. I felt for Dominec and his broken spirit from being held captive all of those years. Who would stay sane after all he had gone through? Grace had such a big heart when it came to those in her pride. It was understandable why these two turned to each other for comfort and had such a deep attraction to one another. While this was well written and there was a lot of detail within the book, the pace threw me off and my attention could not be held. For this reason, the book was just an ok read for me.

It would take a miracle for Grace Calaveras and Dominec Giroux to find any common ground but they form an uneasy alliance when they are sent on a mission that could impact the future of every shifter in the world in this breathtaking paranormal romance.

Dominec doesn’t play well with others and Grace is stuck babysitting his brand of crazy and the reader gets completely caught up in the story as Grace discovers that tangling with this particular tiger isn’t all that crazy. The chemistry burns hot from every page but the relationship is one tangled web of emotions that will definitely take a miracle to unravel, there are others interested in Grace and then there is all the broken pieces of Dominec that only Grace can calm due to his time with the Organization which makes for some very interesting encounters. The fast paced, smooth flowing plot thrills readers with lots of suspense, excitement and passion while Dominec keeps everyone on their toes.

Suspense builds throughout the story as the Pride learns more about their enemy and set plans in motion to rescue more shifters and bring down the Organization but Dominec’s obsession with revenge adds a bit of chaos to the plans and anticipation builds with every encounter with Dominec because you never know what he’s going to do next. The well written scenes and detail paint vivid images that make it easy for the reader to picture each and every scene as well as making it easy to relate to the characters while the intriguing events not only ensure that there is never a dull moment, but guarantee that the reader can’t put the story down.

While I certainly do not want to be on Dominec’s bad side, that is one tiger I wouldn’t mind tangling with because he certainly captured my heart and I was completely absorbed in his and Grace’s story from beginning to end and I can’t wait to visit the Lone Pine Pride to find out what happens next.

“He wanted someone to remember who he was if he vanished off the face of the earth. Someone to prove he had been here, in this life, if only for a while. Like carving his name in a tree. Dominec was here. Grace would be his tree.” – Tangling With the Tiger

Yes! I loved this book! If you are a fan of paranormal romance, especially shifter romance, then the Lone Pine Pride books are a treat. Tangling With the Tiger is number five in this sweet, sweet series! I have really been waiting on the stories for the two characters featured in this book, and the fact that their stories were intertwined just made it all the more amazing. Grace is the first female lieutenant in any of the known prides, and the lioness fights, parties, and runs just as hard as any of the males in the pride. With her mom trying to get her hitched and a casual partner trying to stake a claim, Grace has her hands full while trying to keep everyone safe. When pride psycho and Siberian tiger shifter Dominec goes completely off the reservation on a mission, Grace is appointed as his watchdog. Things are coming to a head with the Organization, but the only thing Dominec has on his mind is vengeance. Dominec is set on revenge for the death of his loved ones and his own torture while under Organization control. Shoving Grace and Dominec together will only result in violence or disappointment…or some horrible variation of both…or will it? I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the world that Andrews was built within this series. In this book the author branched out to introduce new packs and characters that open up future for even more interesting additions. I am looking forward to the next story in this series!

Tangling with the Tiger is the fifth book in Vivi Andrews Lone Pine Pride series.

Lieutenant Grace Calaveras has the misfortune of having to play watchdog to crazy tiger shifter, Dominec Giroux. Dominec is ticking time bomb and it's her responsibility to make sure no one in their Pride gets caught in the explosion. After being held captive and tortured, Dominec's only concern is exacting revenge...no matter the cost.

This was the longest book in the Lone Pine Pride series and the best one, so far. The main plot of the series has been done many times in other shifter books. A crazy corporation takes shifters captive to experiment on. Shifters have to collaborate to take down the facilities and save the captives. Despite this, I still really enjoyed Tangling with the Tiger.

Dominec was a nutcase and I liked that Andrews didn't try to tone him down. He's conniving and his logic, at times, goes down some twisted paths. It made watching his actions toward Grace interesting since, most of the time, neither of them understood what he was doing.

Grace was also a great character. She was extremely motivated and more concerned with her job than anything else. I liked that she was a female character with a high ranking position in the pack, but who didn't secretly long for a relationship to feel fulfilled. She was happy with her life the way it was. So, it was interesting watching her try to find her balance again when Dominec and another shifter start messing with her routine.

All in all, this is turning out to be a great series and I can't wait to see where Andrews goes with it next.

I love bad boys. Tall, dark and handsome. But I'm not one to keep pining for a bad guy if he's genuinely a bad guy. I'm the voice of reason behind the heroine telling her to get the hell out before it's too late, telling her he can't be fixed and he's only hurting her. I'm THAT girl. But Dominec? He pushed all of my buttons. Crazy. Unstable. Violent. Definitely a bad guy and yet...he was never violent with her. The One. The ultimate romance. And instead of being all alpha male hell bent in putting her in a golden cage to protect her, he shadows her everywhere instead. Stalking her. Keeping her safe. And logically I shouldn't find this even remotely understandable much less attractive but I do. Because despite all that stalking he never once corners her. He never once makes her feel suffocated or persecuted or controlled because that is never his intent and he never does try to control her. He simply wants to be there when she needs him. F*ck. That's...dysfunctional. But so damn sweet too. So I liked him. I cheered him on. I even applauded his ingeniousness when he managed to get his revenge on the human hostages without actually dirtying his hands. And I hurt for him whenever he remembered his murdered son. So maybe this romance wasn't the most conventional or healthy I've seen. I still loved it and the actions parts were weirdly perfect. Very well written.

I AM SHOCKED!

I cant believe i actually LIKED this book!

Not that I was expecting for it to suck or anything but more along the lines that very few authors ever get the wounded warriors right.

This was so deep. Dominec was soo deep!

He is so well written...I dont have words.
And lets not even talk about how smooth he is. The best part, he has absolutely no idea of the effect he has.

Phenomenal

Swoon-worthy

Heart Racing.

And I loved how from the very start, he thought of Grace as his and didnt realize it.

She reached him at the door and used her fingertips on his jaw to tip his face down so she could see his eyes. “You’re adorable,” she taunted

Yes. Yes he is.

In case it wasnt obvious, I loved it! ;)

I’m giving this book 4.5 stars!

Dominec Giroux (Siberian tiger-shifter) has been through hell and back. His mate and son were killed, and he was captured. The Organization did cruel experiments on him until he escaped. Others at Lone Pine Pride might think he's a psychopath, and in need of being handled or worse. Does revenge drive him? Will this broken tiger-shifter be able to find his balance or happiness? Dominec was unwilling to risk his heart again because he thought it was a weaknesses that could be exploited. Will he wake up and realize having a mate is worth it?

Grace Calaveras (werelionese) is our heroine. Why does Dominec need to be near her? She wasn't looking for a mate or thoughts of the future. Other shifters, now want her too. Who will she choose? Sometimes life hands you happiness in the least likely places.

Great character development, but not so much with the plot. I love how strong Grace is and that Domenic supports her as she is. It's also nice that she's not stunningly gorgeous, as so many female protagonists are described. Domenic's development seems fairly realistic, although some of his behavior would probably be construed as stalkerish in real life.

This is the first novel I've read in this series, so I have definitely missed out on some background information. That being said, so much of the book was spent on the big bad Organization, with a looming battle. The "climax" occurs so near the end of the book that I was beginning to wonder if the battle was even going to happen in this book! It does, but it's incredibly short on detail in comparison to the build up.

Oh wow. A new to me series and author so of course I had to jump into the newest book and read the series out of order which I'm happy to say you totally can and because the authors writing is so good you don't feel confused at all about what's going on in the series or this book.
Dominec and Grace were really fun and enjoyable characters and I loved the world that Vivi Andrews built and I cannot wait to read more!

Dominec's story. Parts are a little hinky, especially the encounter with the Canadian wolves, but overall I enjoyed the story.
