Tom comes along to join a group of children and is told he will be no.4. To join the group he had to have something to bring, he had a whistle. The others all had a thing of their own and the leader (no.1) had the best of the toys. As they all played together, one by one they lost their toys in various ways and each told the next in charge to get the toy back, it eventually came down to Tom to get all the items back, he did this with his whistle, but he didn't do this on his own, they helped each other and as if by magic Tom's whistle helped bring all the toys back. In the end they all decided to be no.1 as they all helped each other and no one was better than the other.

It has lovely pictures throughout, and like most beautifully illustrated children's books, the pictures were easy to understand and EAL children would be able to follow the story. This would be good for children in KS1 and KS2, even EYFS (to be read to them), just a way to show children how to bond and that no one is better than the other. All children and all people are equal.
