Whoever coined the term ""birdbrained"" wasn't familiar with parakeets. They're smart as well as funny and entertaining. This guide helps you with everything from preparing for and choosing a parakeet to teaching it to talk and perform tricks. It * Details on setting up a healthy home for your pet * Everyday care, including feeding and grooming * Veterinary care and common health problems * Normal parakeet behaviors * Parakeets and children
Parakeets can live up to eighteen years. That's a lot of companionship from a colorful little character who will undoubtedly find a perch in your heart.
A book filled with entry level information. Despite having had adopted a budgie for two years, I found it to be quite informative.
The book has a huge defect that can be rectified in later editions. Most of the photos are not related to the context. For example, the photo for Scaly Face (a disease) is that of a healthy budgerigar. So is almost every other picture. It seems they had a shortage of proper photos for such contexts. In a book that is supposed to educate the newbies, descriptive photos are a 'must'.
An informative enough guide, written in a more personal voice than a lot of pet guides are. I felt like it covered the material adequately enough without leaving me with too many obvious questions.
I have to say that I skipped a bunch of this book but there was stuff in here that I couldn't care less about. Like, for example, Their history. I do think that it was probably pretty useful to read, especially the part about making sure that they have fruits and vegetables. In general a useful, good book to read but I think that it could be greatly downsized and reorganized. The reason why I say reorganized is because, for example, it talks about having to deal with the loss of a parakeet before it talks about getting it to like you. I also really wish it would say what their threshold for cold temperatures is.
