1,512 books119k followersGeorge Raymond Richard "R.R." Martin was born September 20, 1948, in Bayonne, New Jersey. His father was Raymond Collins Martin, a longshoreman, and his mother was Margaret Brady Martin. He has two sisters, Darleen Martin Lapinski and Janet Martin Patten.
Martin attended Mary Jane Donohoe School and Marist High School. He began writing very young, selling monster stories to other neighborhood children for pennies, dramatic readings included. Later he became a comic book fan and collector in high school, and began to write fiction for comic fanzines (amateur fan magazines). Martin's first professional sale was made in 1970 at age 21: The Hero, sold to Galaxy, published in February, 1971 issue. Other sales followed.
In 1970 Martin received a B.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, graduating summa cum laude. He went on to complete a M.S. in Journalism in 1971, also from Northwestern.
As a conscientious objector, Martin did alternative service 1972-1974 with VISTA, attached to Cook County Legal Assistance Foundation. He also directed chess tournaments for the Continental Chess Association from 1973-1976, and was a Journalism instructor at Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa, from 1976-1978. He wrote part-time throughout the 1970s while working as a VISTA Volunteer, chess director, and teacher.
In 1975 he married Gale Burnick. They divorced in 1979, with no children. Martin became a full-time writer in 1979. He was writer-in-residence at Clarke College from 1978-79.
Moving on to Hollywood, Martin signed on as a story editor for Twilight Zone at CBS Television in 1986. In 1987 Martin became an Executive Story Consultant for Beauty and the Beast at CBS. In 1988 he became a Producer for Beauty and the Beast, then in 1989 moved up to Co-Supervising Producer. He was Executive Producer for Doorways, a pilot which he wrote for Columbia Pictures Television, which was filmed during 1992-93.
Martin's present home is Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is a member of Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (he was South-Central Regional Director 1977-1979, and Vice President 1996-1998), and of Writers' Guild of America, West.

久聞《冰與火之歌》系列的盛名，近期總算抽空拜讀了目前已出現的四部曲。因記憶中這部作品出版已久，致令我在閱讀前誤會它快將完結或已經完結，結果卻發現自己在無意中跳進坑底了。
一口氣看完四部曲後，只想總結對這個系列的幾點個人感想。首先，作者轉換視角的寫作手法挻不錯的，但前提是所選擇的角色必須吸引讀者看下去，一旦對角色毫無興趣，短短十數頁的章節，是會令讀者跳著翻頁的，而這一點，最能體現在二部曲中－－二部曲的內容相對一部曲，顯得疲弱得多了，整部作品中，尤以珊莎、史塔克夫人、艾莉亞的情節最讓我煩燥。
人物方面，絕大部分角色都不算討喜，其中，以開啟戰端的史塔克夫人最讓我無言。作者似乎想要塑造出一位睿智、冷靜的夫人，但我覺得人物塑造完全失敗了－－我只看到一個專斷獨行、卻偏偏手握權力的任性女人。
她不經思考就擅自逮捕提利昂，結果觸怒蘭尼斯特家族。後來，又一再地讓情緒失控，甚至為了贖回女兒，不諮詢他人意見就私自釋放弒君者詹姆－－她是瘋了嗎？難道以為僅憑一位女騎士之力，就可以安全押送戰俘至敵國首都？沒經仔細評估就貿然作出決定，只能說所帶來的一切後果都是她自找的。
另外，其丈夫奈德死守對朋友的愚忠，竟然妄想只憑幾句說話，就可以讓王后遠離權力的幼稚想法，直接令國王被殺害，造成群雄並起稱王的局面。這一切只能說愚蠢至極，絲毫沒有上位者的自覺，難怪最後會國破家亡。
弒君者詹姆倒是讓人期待接下來的表現，失去了右手後，他的行為看似回歸騎士的道德規範之中，突然重視誓約起來，倒有幾分先破後立之勢，不免令人好奇這會是曇花一現的情操，抑或他的品格將從此改變，劇變為正義使者。
王后處境的急轉直下，未免讓人措手不及，突如其來地被信教者逮住，詹姆會否趕回君臨營救卻屬未知之數。
依照目前的劇情，鐵王座的國王一直換來轉去，或者最後會是龍后丹妮帶著巨龍君臨大陸，重拾祖上昔日的權勢吧？
