The Lion and the Rabbit is a must read Aesop Fable! In the book the lion is lazy and rather than hunt for his own food, he demands the animals to enter his den on their own so he can eat them. The clever rabbit however has a plan of his own. At the end of the story, the lion's pride gets the better of him and the rabbit saves all the animals. This folklore would be a good fit for k-2 students. It teaches an excellent lesson that wisdom is stronger than physical strength. This is a great book to use as a read-aloud or in a small group setting to practice retelling including the characters, setting, problem, solution, and major events. It can also be used to practice central message. The Lion and the Rabbit stood out as a WOW book to me because of the lesson it teaches kids- wisdom can defeat might. My class is beginning central message soon and I plan to begin by modeling it with The Lion and the Rabbit.
