It is the true story of a young Army officer, groomed for command and assigned to lead a platoon on a reconnaissance mission in the A Shau Valley, Vietnam in 1968. An otherwise routine mission is complicated by the contradiction of an inept chain of command. The resulting casualties devastate the platoon and ...more

Newhall provides an in-depth look into the trauma he faced during and after serving one year in Vietnam. He shows us the PTSD symptoms he faces, why it’s important to seek help, and how it affects those close to you. As a former collegiate football player, I see parallels from this microcosm of a soldier’s mental health to the battles that many face from her injuries suffered on the gridiron. I admire Newhall’s passion throughout his life to succeed at whatever he touched and hope that I can tak ...more

Every so often there’s a book that impresses readers with its content, tone, honesty and gritty realism. Chuck Newhall wrote such a book.

Fearful Odds takes readers from the deadly jungles of Vietnam, where our young soldiers faced death and injury, to Newhall’s return to the U.S. after heroically serving in the military and defending the freedom enjoyed today.

The theme of perseverance and honor is constant throughout Fearful Odds. It offers a real and vivid – and, at times, frightening – picture

A riveting account of the horrors and ordeals of fighting in the A Shau Valley during the Viet Nam War, and how those horrors become the author's everlasting companion as he struggles to achieve normalcy. While I think the book would have benefited from another ro ...more

Horrifying narrative of Viet Nam experience. This book should be required reading for anyone about to vote on sending soldiers to war. I had to keep putting it down, but I had to keep picking it back up. Bloody.
Then the PTSD, the depression, the survival, the guilt, all that goes into the life of a soldier who comes home.
Very sad, excellent memoir writing, and finally helpful and I think uplifting for those who suffer war.
