Sami Rizzo #3

A Piece of You

Rate this book
Homicide Detective Sami Rizzo is at it again! She never dreamed "America's Finest City," would be tormented by yet another serial killer, but for the third time in the last five years a depraved maniac is stalking the streets of San Diego. Based on her qualifications and prior successes dealing with multiple murders, who else would Captain Davison assign to head the investigation? Different from Sami's past experiences, this fanatic is like no other. His methods of killing defy everything profilers think they know about serial killers. As an intense investigation begins and bits and pieces of evidence emerge, no one can understand his motivation. He's merciful, yet brutal. And just to make things even more confusing, all of his victims are blood-related. Is he settling a vendetta? Did he randomly pick a name out of the phone book and begin a rampage? Or is there a deeper story? Based on very little evidence and a lot of gut instincts, Detective Rizzo pieces together a complex puzzle and narrows the field of possible suspects. She learns that the killings may connect in some way to powerful people within the judicial system and doesn't know who to trust. Ultimately, she comes face to face with the killer for a battle of brain and brawn. Can she outwit the shrewd killer, or will she be his next victim?

It wasn't until I hit my 40's that I discovered my God-given talent for the written word. I'm not totally clear on how the first book came about. I wrote it in 1992. I think it was on a dare. I had been working as a General Manager in the retail automotive business, and a colleague suggested that someone should write an intelligent guide on how to buy a car and beat the dealer at his own game. It was a challenge that beckoned me, and for some reason the whole idea excited me. With pen in hand--I didn't own an early computer or word processor back then--I wrote the entire book longhand. I tackled this undertaking without an outline or even the most remote idea how this book would unfold. My approach was totally unorganized and unconventional. I just started writing, and the chapters poured out of my head. I could barely keep pace with my thoughts and ideas. For fear a fresh idea would fade to oblivion, I often had to stop writing long enough to scribble notes about a new idea that popped into my head.

To date, Amazon Publishing has published three of my novels: They Never Die Quietly, Resuscitation, and I Do Solemnly Swear. The three books combined have sold 150,000 copies worldwide. I'm not yet hanging up there with the big guns--not even close--but for a skinny kid who nearly flunked English in high school, I think I've done pretty well.

Hypocrisy, my fourth novel was released March of 2014, and A Piece of You, novel number five, should be released later this year. The moral of the story? If you have a passion for writing, don't let rejection hold you back or discourage you. Persevere and remember that rejection is a prerequisite to success. Keep those fingers poised above the keyboard and write, write, write.

Though I really liked this book, there were a few problems I had with it. For the most part, it seemed to be edited okay, but there were several times (probably around 20-30 times within the whole book) that I was clenching my teeth because of a left out quotation mark or no period at the end of a sentence.
I liked the story. It was a good story line, but almost too cliche. The main character, Sami, went through so many different things but none of them really seemed to affect her that emotionally.
I didn't connect with Sami or any of the other characters. I didn't feel attached to them and I didn't feel as if I knew them. One thing that really bothered me is that the book didn't have near enough detail on the characters. Through out this whole novel, I didn't even get to hear what the main character looked like.
Now, I'm usually not one for murder mysteries, but I did really enjoy the parts where you see through the eyes of the murderer. That was very interesting. However, the whole plot line was just too predictable and cliche for me.

A Piece of You by D M Annechino has all the elements I love, from the bloody cover with the missing piece, to the serial killer running AMOK within the pages. I mean…with a line like this:

He opened his duffle bag and removed a hacksaw, a utility knife and a thick towel. He whisered into her ear as if she was still alive. “I’m so sorry Theresa…All I want is A Piece of You.”

in the opening pages, I am HOOKED.

Sometimes when the justice system lets them down, a vigilante thinks it is up to them to right the wrong. HE is making a horrific statement and feels he has nothing to lose. I feel so bad for HIM, but no matter how I twist it, this cannot end well for him and rightly so.

A Piece of You also tells Sami’s story. Have you ever wondered how big someone’s heart can be? When it comes to Sami, the answer is HUGE! . I could not do what she does and I love her for it.

Sami is a tough and righteous homicide detective that will not be swayed from doing the right thing. For some reason, serial killers have become her specialty.

A Piece of You is the third book in the Sami Rizzo Thriller series, but reading out of order didn’t affect my enjoyment. The blanks are filled in and it only makes me want to go back and read what I missed.

I know the story and writing is fantastic, when it makes me fall in love with the villain, feeling his anguish, but knowing no matter what he does, his actions are futile and the price he will pay is high and I cannot stop reading, wondering how it will end.

I want more of Sami Rizzo’s and D M Annechino’s stories and I want them now.

A Piece of You is the third of three books I am reviewing by this author featuring San Diego homicide detective Sami Rizzo. Annechino writes psychological thrillers that are just over the line - enough to get your heart pounding but still let you fall asleep at night. Gory details are for the most part left to the imagination.

Sami is again on the trail of a new serial killer, one who cuts off part of one leg post mortem. Why? It's a mystery that doesn't become clear until about 3/4 of the way through the book. Then a new dimension is added when we find out all those killed are related. The story line shifts in narrative from Sami's story to the killer's story. This lets the reader follow the logic of the detective's thinking as well as explore, and in this case sympathize, with the serial killer.

Of the three books in this series, this one has less of the truly creepy aspect found in They Never Die Quietly and Resuscitation which is fine by me. I enjoyed letting warped evil step aside for a character whose motivation I could wrap my mind around. While the killer does admit to killing people who do not deserve it and what he does post mortem is very disturbing, the reason behind his shedding blood and dismembering the corpse is heartbreaking. The reader can understand and relate all too well with the emotions driving him. As such, I think I of the three in this series, I enjoyed this one the most.

Wow. This was some kind of twisted. Have you ever sympathized with the killer in a story? It was hard not to in this book. I resisted though. It didn’t matter the circumstances, or that some of the potential victims weren’t all that likable, murder was murder, and this killer was determined to wipe out an entire family.

While this is the third book in the series and I haven’t read the other books, I had little trouble jumping in. The author gave some brief info on past events in the right places, without slowing down my reading momentum. I zipped through this mystery in one night.

While I liked Rizzo, I had some trouble with how she handled and accepted some situations. Perhaps going back and meeting her in the beginning will help me see why she reacted and thought like she did. That’s the only hiccup in reading this book first.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and he kept me entertained for several hours. I’ll be reading more of his books, for sure.

I received this book for my honest review.

“All I want is a piece of you.” - says the creepy ass killer. Yeash...

Well, this one does not stack up well with the previous two. Yes, the serial killer is creepy, but he also sort of has a point! Not that his actions are justifiable, but he's not as bat-shit crazy as I like! Also, it's so obvious who the killer is, that Rizzo looks pretty lame in taking so long to figure it out. And honestly, I could have cared less about all of her personal problems, which take up a big chunk of this book. For my money, book #1 is the jewel of the three, and this one, well, I wouldn't re-read it.

FIRST IMPRESSION:

First Impressions are kind of moot point for a book belonging to a series because you have certain pre conceived notions about at least some of the characters involved in the story. But then, every installment of a series offers yet another carefully crafted story, and the author takes up the challenge to keep the same characters and give an entirely different story. Some books succeed in it. I have already read two books in this series and therefore, knew a little of what to expect in this one.

But to comment on the impression this particular book made on me, the first and foremost thing I noticed was the cover (well, of course) and it was alluring in a strange way. It is simple, striking and achieves what it sets out to do - shock the reader. But only after reading the story would I get to know the deeper significance of the piece missing from the whole jigsaw. The summary is crisp and offers a mild shade of intrigue.

REVIEW:

Thrillers - especially mystery thrillers that talk about serial killers and police procedures (probably featuring a detective from the force) have a certain formula to be followed. It is only with this base that the author is expected to work and bring up a masterpiece story that intrigues, excites, exhilarates and finally stuns a reader. A Piece of You does the first half of this well. It follows the template required for police thrillers and cooks up an interesting tale based on that.

Detective Sami Rizzo is now married to Al, who was, incidentally forgiven for his cheating excursion. Sami could not believe that the city might yet again be in the grip of a horrific serial killer. This time around, the killer follows a different modus operandi. He kills people and takes away... souvenirs. Sami, with her previous experiences in handling a few cases successfully, is called in to this case too. But what Sami does not bargain for is a conundrum of a killer. He is soft, yet harsh. His motives are unclear (yes, like many other serial killers, we get to know the story only almost near the end of the book). Sami finds it hard to classify him under any category.

While it is not new for a serial killer to justify all that he does with excuses that sound plausible and even sometimes justifiable - this killer takes the cake. His reasons, motive and thought process attract the reader and appeal to a twisted part of the readers brain. It takes a lot of clear brain to say no matter what the reason, a gruesome murder is a heinous act that steals a life. It does not help when the killer takes down members in a clan, making the reader wonder whether it was the case of family vendetta or a random act of chance.

Sami Rizzo goes about detecting in her usual style. No matter how disconnected the pieces seem, she tries to solve it with the sparse clues and her gut instinct. Of all the books I have read featuring Sami, I liked this one best. The serial killer is a brainy psycho and Sami barely misses falling in his hit list. The story has a few twists and turns, some of them predictable for a person who has read a few books from this genre. But overall, except for a few gory details, the story focuses more on the events rather than each killing in excruciating detail.

No matter what excuse is given, a serial killer has only a misguided motive and delusional attitude about revenge and payment for sins. To sum up best, the author himself writes beautifully about the killer's mindset.

Today I feel particularly overwhelmed with self-pity and grief. I think about what once was. What is no more. What can never be. The mere thought of vengeance excites me and fills me with great exhilaration. I can only conclude that the sweetness of revenge has a far greater impact on one’s soul than the burden of guilt or the consequence of judgment day.

If this does not say much about the book and the way he writes them, I don't know what else does. The language is engaging. There are a few editing errors - mostly those that can be overlooked. The plot and the build up to the climax are not very elaborate. With a few predictable twists and some rather unpleasant, shocking unpredictable turns, this story is one that will manage to hold your interest for a few hours together - hours you could use to finish this at a go.

WHAT I LIKED:
The hidden meaning so beautifully portrayed by the cover image.
The character of Sami finally managing to attract the reader in me
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER:
The story could have veered a bit farther away from protocol to make it more thrilling

VERDICT:

A book that will interest you if you are new to this genre. Overall a good, well thought out and well written thriller.

D.M. Annechino in his new book, “A Piece of You” Book Three in the Sami Rizzo Series published by Createspace Publishing gives us another adventure with Sami Rizzo.

From the back cover: Homicide Detective Sami Rizzo is at it again! She never dreamed “America’s Finest City,” would be tormented by yet another serial killer, but for the third time in the last five years a depraved maniac is stalking the streets of San Diego. Based on her qualifications and prior successes dealing with multiple murders, who else would Captain Davison assign to head the investigation?

Different from Sami’s past experiences, this fanatic is like no other. His methods of killing defy everything profilers think they know about serial killers. As an intense investigation begins and bits and pieces of evidence emerge, no one can understand his motivation. He’s merciful, yet brutal.

She learns that the killings may connect in some way to powerful people within the judicial system and doesn’t know who to trust. Ultimately, she comes face to face with the killer for a battle of brain and brawn. Can she outwit the shrewd killer, or will she be his next victim?

You wouldn’t think that there could be so many serial killers concentrated within the San Diego area but that would be so wrong. And, I suppose, if you are a serial killer you have a bent for the weird. This is not a complaint Sami really has her hands full going up against this killer. She has clues but none of them make any sense and there is a real possibility that this time the serial killer will make her one of his victims. Get ready Mr. Annechino has given us the fastest-paced pf all three fast-paced thrillers. “A Piece of You” is loaded with twists and turns that will leave you guessing all the while you are flipping pages to find out what happens next. This book is going to take up all of your attention so start reading early because once you get started you will not want to put this book down until you actually finish.

A great murder mystery! Prologue:
"It's hard for me to believe that just a short time ago, I lived a peaceful, content life. I was a proud father, devoted husband, good neighbor and friend to many. But all of that has changed. She has stolen my neat and orderly life and has sentenced me to live in misery.
Whatever, the case, they're all going to die, each and every one of them. It begins today"...prologue from A Piece of You.

Is revenge the answer for loss? In some people's hearts and minds it is. There is a serial killer at work in San Diego. Not your typical serial killer either. Why would a serial killer be merciful in his method of murder but still be brutal enough to cut off the leg of the victim. There has to be a reason.

Detective Sami Rizzo and her partner Osbourn (Ozzie) arrive at the scene of the first murder victim, Theresa Westgate, they find that the victim's right leg had been cut off postmortem. Why would someone do such a thing? That is the job of Sami and Ozzie and when they interview the siblings of Theresa, the case becomes more difficult. Theresa was a woman who had no enemies, just a very nice woman so what could the motive be? As there are more murders, the puzzle clues come together and we eventually find that maybe sometimes revenge is not as simple as it may seem.

This is third in the series of Sami Rizzo Thrillers and a very good one at that. I did not read the previous ones so I can say that this can be read as a stand alone. As the story goes on we not only learn a bit more about Sami but also the killer and as to his motives for his revenge killings. So I think if you love a good crime/thriller novel, then give this author a shot. If you want to start from book 1 in the series, by all means but read them you should. I give this book 5 stars for the plot, writing, all of it.

In this sequel to Resuscitation and the third in the series of novels starring homicide detective Sami Rizzo, a serial killer once again terrorizes San Diego, the third time in a five-year period. Given her accomplishments in dealing with the prior two cases, Sami is a natural pick to spearhead the investigation at the behest of Captain Davison. However, the new murderer whom she investigates is unlike the previous ones, defying criminal profilers, although the killer does target blood relatives of his initial victim. Sami realizes that the murders may have a link to those involved in the justice system, and ultimately confronts the killer himself.

A Piece of You opens with a prologue narrated entirely by the serial murderer himself, initially a good father, husband, neighbor, and friend to many, who had until the book’s time lived a relatively peaceful life, although he vows vengeance against a group of individuals whose marital status, where they live, the vehicles they drive, their phone numbers, and so forth, he knows. The third installment features many passages within the standard third-person structure narrated from his perspective, sometimes whole chapters but other times interspersed within the primary text, beginning with a woman named Theresa Westgate held at gunpoint.

The book quickly moves the action to homicide detective Sami Rizzo, who walks into her police precinct early in the morning, her husband Al at home afflicted by influenza, and picks up word on the initial murder, receiving the addresses of the victim’s siblings and beginning her investigation at their respective homes, with the subsequent story having decent denouement, and like its predecessors being a general enjoyable story, with the first-person segments taking readers into the mind of the main antagonist, and the third-person excerpts being just as good, gripping readers until the very end.

Book 3 in the Sami Rizzo series, and D. M. Annechino has not disappointed me. I have read, well listened to the audio books for the first 2 books in this series and they just keep getting better.
Sami Rizzo is a San Diego Homicide Detective. She is now working on her 3rd serial killer case in 5 years. Grief can do a lot of things to a lot of people and in this particular book it takes grief and turns it into revenge. At times you even feel pity and maybe even want to justify what the killer is doing, but morally you can't. Can you?
D. M Annechino drug me in from the first page, not just in this book but in all 3. When you get to the last change you are drooling waiting to be able to pick up the next book in the series. If this was television show or even a movie I who am no much on TV would watch his stories come to life.
All of his characters are well thought out, h has a awesome way of each character seeming like a living breathing person. I love how over the 3 books in this series I have read, he tends to keep the main set of characters and he keeps them as the same people in all the books, no radical changes.
The serial killers in the books are also well thought out. You only get snippets of actual person and I have always been let in awe at the end of the books. Once you think you have the killer pinpointed you find out it was someone totally different.
I personally cannot wait for the 4th book in the series. Great Job D. M. Annechino, I am truly a fan.

The best thriller book I ever read

I am so mad at myself for not reading the 1st and 2nd book of the Sami Rizzo series. I read the 3rd book A PIECE OF YOU in the series. You still can read this book as stand alone. It is the best thriller book I ever read.

This book will give you insight inside the mind of the killer. It is so eerie yet you will learn what his motives to kill people. I never scared while reading a book before except this one. It is hard to put the book down once you started reading it. This book is a must read if you love thriller.

My favorite character is Sami Rizzo. This girl has no fear. She is very strong woman despite having problems in her marriage. You cannot put this girl down. She will do anything and even offer her life to save people. She received many death threat but never stop until she solved this crime. It is a beautiful book. You will hate and love the killer but above all you will adore Sami Rizzo.

I highly recommend this book from the author. If you have not read his writings, you are missing a piece of your books to read.

Disclosure:

I received the paperback copy of the book to review. All my thoughts and opinions are 100% honestly mine.

A Piece of You: A Sami Rizzo Thriller by D.M. Annechino was by far my favorite book in the series. I think this was my favorite because I could see the things in this book actually happen. Because of the subject matter in book one, I wasn’t able to bring myself to read it but this one is 100% better than book two was. Even with this book being the third one in the series it can be read as a stand alone book but like I said before if want to read the whole series I would start with book one. I really enjoyed the serial killer in this book and to be honest, I am not sure why. I liked this book as well because I had a hard time figuring out the whole the killer was and I was interested as to why he was killing members of a certain family and not just random people. This book was well written like the other two books were and it is a story I would for sure read again because I enjoyed it that much. If you love thrillers I know you will enjoy this one as much as I did.

A Piece of You is the 3rd book in a series .. I haven’t read the other two & there were obviously some back references but it didn’t spoil my reading experience. It would possibly be beneficial to read them in order to gain the full picture though.

If you like murder mysteries with a strong female lead the this is for you .. I quite liked Sami she believed in doing the right thing. There is quite a lot going on in her personal life which creates a nice balance to the professional side of the story so there is plenty to keep the reader eager to find out what is happening on a few levels.

Some of it is predictable, some ‘mundane’ investigative jargon which is set in San Diego so not necessarily quite what I am used to (UK) but nevertheless it’s what I would call a good yarn. There are moments of brutality but this is what you would expect from a thriller. Trying to figure out the intentions of the suspect kept me reading until the end. Many thanks to the author & iRead Book Tours for the opportunity to read this in exchange for my honest review.

This is book three in the Samantha Rizzo Thrillers. While you don’t need to read the previous two to follow this book, it was still nice to have read them and know Sami and her family.

I was told I would like this one and that it would be different than the first two and it absolutely was. This was a “cleaner” thriller than the previous two books. That’s not to say it wasn’t a book about “killing” but it did not have the sexual undertone as the first two books did.

One thing I have to say that I really like about this author and his books is that even though we typically know the “who” aspect of the book, he weaves the reason throughout the entire story which makes you think and keep reading. All throughout, you get back story and current story that intertwine perfectly.

I read all three books consecutively and even though I am writing this on January 1 and the review isn’t due until end of January; I couldn’t let Sami rest.

While the first two books weren’t necessarily favorites of mine, the Samantha Rizzo Thriller series is a really good series.

This is the third book in the Detective Sami Rizzo series. If you are a fan of murder/suspense, police protocol novels then you have to check this series out. While these books can be read as stand alone novels, I think that you will appreciate the working relationship between Sami and her partner, Detective Richard Osbourn. Sami and Richard are like ying and yang. They help balance each other out. However at times when Richard starts to act and talk like Sami it is entertaining.

Be warned because if you are not a fan of blood and guts then this is your warning. However this series is a lot less gory than other series I have read. In the beginning I had no clue the motive or the killer but at the story progressed I did get a clue as to who the killer was but I did not really put all of the pieces together until the end. Which the ending was a great one. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

I received a free copy of the book for an honest review.

I listened to the first two Sami Rizzo books, They Never Die Quietly and Resuscitation, and was looking forward to reading this one as well. All of these books will stand on their own but if you love reading series like I do, I suggest starting with the first one. I enjoy a good murder mystery and A Piece of You is a good one. It is full of mystery, suspense, and drama.

Sami Rizzo always seems to have a lot going on both personally and professionally. For the third time in 5 years there’s another serial killer on the loose! Sami is a great character. She is smart and has learned to go by her gut instincts. She’s also more mature and sensible than a lot of characters, which is refreshing.

A Piece of You is definitely a book I recommend especially if you like murder mysteries.

I really enjoy reading murder mysteries and the ones that focus on serial killers have always been my favorites mainly because of the psychological elements involved in the cases. I did not read book one or book two of this series, yet besides being a little less knowledgeable on Detective Sami Rizzo, I did not feel like I was missing out on anything. This case was this case and not the cases she worked in books one and two. This aspect makes it easy for a reader to jump in anywhere in the series. I enjoyed this entire book, however my favorite parts were the areas where it was the killer's perspective. These sections allowed the reader to understand the killer, his motives, and his mercy.

Homicide Detective Sami Rizzo has dealt with serial killers before. This time she has been asked to deal with someone who is a totally different kind of killer. Why is someone killing people that are all members of the same family? What could the people in this family have done to make someone hate all of them? No one even Sami can figure out what this is all leading up to. This is going to be a a really hard mystery crime to solve. What does this case have to do with others that are very well connected and who have a lot of friends in high places? Is this a set up for something else a lot bigger? I give this book a 5/5. I was given this book for as review and these are all my own opinions.

The novel was full of twists but I could predict a lot of things. If you read a lot of thrillers you may not be very impressed. I also somehow didn’t end up liking Sami (the main character) too much. I know people who have read could think differently on it. for more check here-- https://ishitasood.wordpress.com/2016...
