Lauren Child MBE is an English author and illustrator. She was the UK Children's Laureate from 2017-19.

Child grew up in Wiltshire as the middle child of three sisters and the daughter of two teachers. She has always been interested in the many aspects of childhood, from gazing into toy shop windows to watching American children's shows from the 1960s. After attending two Art Schools, she travelled for six months, still unsure about which career to embark upon.

Before writing and illustrating children's books Child started her own company 'Chandeliers for the People' making lampshades. It was only when she came to write and illustrate the book Clarice Bean, That's Me that she decided to devote her time to writing and illustrating books for children, which combines her fascination for childhood and her talent for designing and creating. Child gets her inspiration from other people's conversations or from seeing something funny happen.

Her book I Will Not Ever Never Eat A Tomato won the 2000 Kate Greenaway Medal. For the 50th anniversary of the Medal (1955–2005), a panel named it one of the top ten winning works, which comprised the shortlist for a public vote for the nation's favourite. It finished third in the public vote from that shortlist.

Child lives in North London.

I just had to make this my first read of 2017 as I have been suffering with a heavy cold and chest infection for two weeks and I have been telling my friends (much to their consternation!) 'I'm really ever so NOT well'. And that is exactly how Lola feels in this story.

Charlie, her brother, feeling sorry for her, takes her in some pink milk and biscuits in an attempt to cheer her up. Pink milk is Lola's favourite but on this occasion she says, 'Yuck' as it tastes horrible and the biscuits are 'too prickly to swallow' as well and Lola states, 'I don't feel like eating or drinking anything' - I know the feeling having gone off my food and hot drinks completely.

Charlie tries flowers but, sneezing, Lola manages to say, 'They're not very good at cheering up this little person!' Her nose hurts and she is unable to smell anything so Charlie decides on a song. That doesn't work because Lola's throat is too sore to join in the singing. Charlie does sing a song, 'The sun has got his hat on ...' and then takes Lola into the bathroom to see the germs in her throat in a mirror.

'Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ...,' declares Lola 'There must be thousands and hundreds of germs, Charlie.' Counting them '1 ... 2 ... 3 ... 12 ... 15 ... 54 billion ... a trillion ...', Lola is interrupted by the telephone ringing and it is Marv asking Charlie to go for a game of football. Repeating to him that she is not very well, Lola persuades him to do a jigsaw puzzle with her instead but then Marv arrives at the door to take Charlie to football.

As he agrees to go, Charlie sneezes and ends up in bed with a cold. The following day Lola is recovered and she decides that she will look after Charlie but all he can utter is 'Muuummmm!' for it is his turn now to be ever so NOT well!

I was really put off by the drawing style on these Charlie & Lola books initially, but they are very funny - the writing is great.
This one in particular is very sweet, as Charlie is so nice to his little sister, who is "really ever so not well" - he even turns down his friend Marv's invite to go play football together.
I also enjoyed Lola's reminiscing of when she wasn't ill and could smell flowers and enjoy drinking her pink milk; the ending is also very funny.
Recommended.

Charlie has promised his friend, Marv, that he will be there for the big soccer game. But Lola has a cold and Charlie meets her every demand with the patience of a saint. Charlie then becomes sick and she promises not to leave his side until he gets better (much to his dismay!)

Well, when I'm sick, I can't remember 'when things tasted yummy' and singing and smelling. So I think Lola is only a little sick. And Charlie has a martyr complex.

We absolutely love the Charlie and Lola series of books created by Lauren Child. The stories are fun and our girls love the characters from watching them on television.

This story shows Charlie's devotion to Lola when she is feeling ill. He has competing desires to play soccer with his friends and to stay and care for his little sister. I love that he is willing to entertain and cheer up Lola when she is feeling run down and frustrated by her cold.

The illustrations are as terrific as we've come to expect with these books, and although this story is not actually written by Ms. Child (instead based on one of the television episodes), it still retains the charm of the original books.

We really enjoyed reading this story together (and of course, I brought out my best English accent, much to my oldest daughter's dismay.)

This is the second book, I read, by Lauren Child. And I like it much better than "My Wobbly tooth..."

I like very much how Charlie cares for his sick sister Lola. I wish all brothers are like that. He even was late on playing time with his friend because Lola wanted him to stay with her while she's not feeling well.

In this book, I've noticed that the drawings were cut from the original paper and pasted on the background. Also, parts of the pictures were glossy and that gave the scenes some texture.

This book is worth several reads.

Poor Lola isn't well, and it's up to Charlie to help her feel better. But will he be able to respond to her demands and also keep his promise to Marv and make it to the big game?

This is probably one of our (at least my) Charlie & Lola books. It's the first episode I remember seeing and that definitely influences the performance of the aloud reading. I totally get the "my pink milk tastes green" thing.

Charlie and Lola are siblings... and sometimes Lola is a handful for her older brother. BUT each book is written where Charlie is helping Lola with something she needs or helps explain things to her. In this one Lola is not feeling very good and although Charlie has a ball game his friends are waiting for him he stays and tries to help Lola feel better. A very nice book of sibling interaction.

My 4yr old dd picked this one out from the library. We are fans of the cartoon shows. It's a cute story and fun to read. I'll take these stories any day over less desirable ones. Twaddle-dee. :)
