Janet is traveling home by ship from the West Indies after the death of her husband, to take up her life again in Scotland. Most of the passengers become reluctantly close-knit, in their efforts to hide from a terrible set of triplets who have no concept of the effect they have on people. I enjoy Jane Duncan's homey but intelligent books about herself and her interactions with the people she meets and who influence her for good or ill.
The books aren't strictly autobiographical but I believe the follow the broad outlines of her life.
Her descriptions of her childhood in the Scottish Highlands and her family are charming.

This one was recommended to me by a teacher colleague who adores this author and all her "My Friend" books. I found the writing a bit pedantic and the attitudes of the characters rather judgmental. The Misses Kindness (and young Helga) were interesting, but the rest of the cast was tedious and maudlin. I will take a pass on the rest of the series.

Fun and light read -- but the language used was rich and more complex than current "light" reads.
