Die Königin der Farben

Rate this book

--Deborah Cerresi

As a child
Jutta was born in 1955, in Hamburg. She went to school for ten years and describes it as “a necessary evil”.

As an adult
Jutta is one of the best-known picture-book artists and cartoonists in Europe. She currently lives in Germany.

As an artist
When asked where the idea for Opas Engel (the original German title of Grandpa’s Angel) Jutta commented, “At the time I had my drawing table at the film studio of a friend and was actually looking for a funny story for a film. My friend’s studio had a big window looking onto the street and we would watch how the school children plodded along – sometimes deep in thought. Watching this, I couldn’t help thinking that all these children usually do arrive safely. Then I had the idea for the guardian angel.” Grandpa’s Angel however, was not conceived as a story for children from the beginning. Jutta added, “I don’t like that; I believe that stories are like vessels. They offer a form, but every reader – no matter whether young or old – fills it anew with their experiences and their individual stories.”

This book of colors and feelings is one that will make children think as they read it. It has some dark moments, similar to those found in the Giving Tree, but ultimately everything comes together and works out in the end. Simple illustrations and a clever concept, as well! Great for young children.

I love how this book explores colors and the feelings that come from them. This is something that children take for granted and most adults forget. As you read the book you begin to feel them again. I'm not going to lie. The queen's dress was quite disturbing to me. That's the difference in an adult or a child reading it.

Do jakich przepychanek dochodzi?! Głowa szaleje, oczy pełne barw, fajerwerki, spektakl, taniec farb, kredek i ołówków.
Sama zaś opowieść i główna bohaterka mają w sobie poezję.
Gruba oprawa, gruby papier, ciekawy format i ta procesja kolorów. Dla mnie super. Ja polecam. Jestem zadowolona.

niech kolory wybuchną - niech zrobi się pięknie

I'm not thrilled with the dress that the queen wears. Nor do I necessarily agree with the interpretations of the characteristics/ personalities of the colors red, blue, and yellow. Nor do I understand why all the other colors, like green and purple etc., were not included.

Still, it's a neat concept, an important metaphor, and worth considering sharing with the right child.

Good for her with her tiddies out.

But jokes aside, this book would be very helpful when teaching about colours.

Matilda is the Queen of Colors. She orders her subjects around--gentle blue, wild red, warm yellow. An argument ensues and soon everything is gray. Only the queen's eventual tears wash the gray away and then the color comes back of its own accord, brighter than ever and ready to play. This is a sweet book with black and white illustrations that are at first scribbled with the highlighted colors and then filled with them. There's an existential feel to the text and the starkness of the background illustrations. One has to ask, however, who the intended audience is? The only character is a chubby adult whose floppy breasts seem to have a life of their own in her strapless gown. I wouldn't put this in an elementary library, yet its picture book format makes it a hard sell for older students. Perhaps its best place would be in an art class, discussing the personalities of colors and those who wield them.

As this was first published in Germany, I wonder what might be missing in the translation.
The first page could be confusing: is Matilda another queen or is she the queen of colors? Since no other person ever appears in the story, it should be clear.
I don't even know what to say about the Queen's figure and the positions shown. Awkward.
Does this give stereotypes to colors? Or is it a prompt to explore how to use colors to show emotions? The invitation to "do your own coloring" on the last page shows a happy queen, so is that a subtle effort to indicate that the child (or adult?) should color a happy image?
Is she sad because gray took over? Is she depressed?
Use "I Am a Rainbow" by Dolly Parton, or "My Many Colored Days" by Seuss, or even "Today I Feel Silly" by Jamie Lee Curtis to explore the connections between colors and emotions.

I'm not sure what to make of this picture book featuring a bossy queen and the colors that surround her. It appears that she is able to bring the colors to her. Some of them bring her joy, and some cause unhappiness. Things work out best when all the colors are present and when they all get along, which, I suppose, could represent how our lives are better when there is harmony. It was hard for me to like the queen because of her attitude and because the illustrations didn't particularly appeal to me. Perhaps something has been lost in translation for these American eyes.
