As in the first edition, many of the classical articles are paired with contemporary theoretical and empirical studies that illustrate the continuing value of the classical concepts. Garner continues to offer her concise introductions, and all have been completely revised and updated for this edition.

This book is a good source of sociological thoery, history and understanding. I recommend it to anyone in the undergrad sociology program.

In-depth examination of sociological theories from Marx, Durkheim, and Weber, along with Machiavelli, Burke, Comte, Zeitlin, and dozens others. Heavy book, heavy reading, though admittedly, Garner's intros to each section sheds more than just a light on the different authors and their materials, especially Weber's which I found to be particularly sleep inducing.
