"For Fans Larry McMurtry, Cormac McCarthy, and Johnny D. Boggs
Buell opens with a death threat and ends with a promise of a new life. In between, Buell Mace, a confused and guilt-ridden young man, longs to be loved but fears affection more than death."
Kind of little house on the prairie meets big valley meets the shootest. I would have given 3 stars, but got interested in how it would all turn out. Was not disappointed.
Probably deserves 4 stars. I didn't know it was part of a trilogy and disappointed that the story didn't stand alone better, especially the open-ended conclusion. Mid-18th century in the Nebraska territories we read tales about Carlisle from the point of view of Paul Steele and his son Simon. At odds with relatives, dirt poor until the town drunk gives them seed money to open a business. That's the kind of headscratchers you read here, never getting the back story until later. Motives are mysterious and you often get the feeling something bad is being set up, yet the narrative about life on the plains lumbers on and you wonder if it really is going anywhere. Eventually things do happen but not what I anticipated. We reach what seems like an ending yet the story keeps going creating chaos and setting up a sequel, costing it a 4th star in my mind.
