This is a wonderfully-written historical mystery set just after the great Chicago fire. I loved the details of what the city was like following that catastrophe, especially as not much has been written about that tumultuous period. Pirrone writes vivid descriptions that convey the scene without slowing the reader down. The mystery was well thought-out and plotted, keeping me guessing as I went along. But my favorite aspect of the book, of course, was the wonderful dynamic between Irish Catholic

This is written by a fellow author from Allium Press of Chicago. In the second book of this series, Rivka, a young woman from an orthodox Jewish background and Hanley, a young police detective of Irish background engage against the backdrop of Chicago soon after the fire of 1871. I am so happy to've discovered this book...well written historical fiction, my favorite genre, set in the city of my heart, Chicago. It's like reading Rina Lazurus/Peter Decker set back 100+ years....I'm wondering if the author read those? I can't wait to now read her previous book while I wait for her to write another one!
