I recommend this book to everybody, especially young people.

It's YA, coming of age books about a girl who try to find herself and her way home (figuratively and literally).

Frist half of the book is little slow, but don't give up. It's worth your time, I promise.

I read some of the others S. E. Smith books and didn’t expect this to be honest.
I love it and definitely will read the sequel.

This is a book I gladly would give my daughter to read.
I read it in a couple of hours and caught myself smilin

Whoa, this book was pretty good. Better than okay - definitely not perfect, but still, better than average.
Voyage of the Defiance is a story about a girl named Makayla, whose life happens to be spiraling out of control - her mom was getting too addicted with meds, and she's got this boyfriend who gives her the stuff and even beats her, and now, after being rushed to the hospital, suddenly leaves Makay

This was an embarrassing book to read. I found it to be poor in writing and in content which is a shame because the synopsis and the cover are what drew me in. It looked fairly good and thus is how I was misled.

I couldn’t stand Makayla and that’s a huge issue. But it’s not my fault, she didn’t attempt to get me to like her. Makayla was rude, irrational, judgmental towards people she doesn’t know, insensitive, disrespectful, disobedient (but it is praised as defian

What a good book about coming of age and finding oneself. We find Makayla when she is in a hard place: her mother is in the hospital because of her addiction to pills and painkillers, and her boyfriend is supplying the pills. Due to this situation, she has to go live with her grandad, a man she barely remembers.
During the captivating plot we follow Makayla into her journey of sanation and acceptance, of understanding her mother and of being afraid to end up being like her.
So, when she takes his

So Very Good No Words I Can Say Will Do It Justice

Hooboy! This book deserves 10 stars. I am going to be absolutely honest here. For the first half of the book I was thinking this was a nice YA book about a 16 then turned 17 year old girl who has a lot of problems at home, is sent to live with her grandfather in a different city, dealing with heart ache, insecurity, new relationships, the whole gambit of emotions that go with it. Very good story, but not what I typically read. Then, halfway thro

For some reason, I had no idea whether I'd like this book or not, usually I have an expectation of what would this book be like to read but that wasn't the case with Voyage of the Defiance! I didn't hate it, nor did I love it to death! Although I did enjoy it, it wasn't my favorite of genres to read. I'm more of a fantasy type of girl, so this book had been a little too realistic for me, but this was a great book - especially for young readers, but I personally wasn't over the moon about it.

I liked the premise of this book, and plotwise, the second half of this novel almost redeems it. Also, Makayla has the potential to be a great heroine. A rebellious lone-wolf type of teen girl who keeps her problems to herself and doesn't want to ask for help, she's been shunted off to live with her estranged grandfather while her mother recovers from painkiller addiction. But after reading this book, unfortunately I think I mostly just like the girl on the cover. I wish I looked like her.

It has been awhile since I've read a really good YA book. As a matter of fact, I had stopped reading them because they were so cookie cutter and lacked originality. However, "Voyage of the Defiance" was definitely a interesting story that showcases the resiliency of the human spirit.

Sixteen year old, Makayla Summerlin has just been trying to make it day to day with the help of her friends while living with her drug addicted mother and her despicable boyfriend. Then, when she is pulled out of cla

A rite of passage

A brilliantly written book by Susan Smith for the YA market. Well, I'm not a teenager or YA but I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Makayla has not had an easy life so far. Her motherbis hooked on prescription drugs and useless men. Makayla feels as if she is the mother and wonders when she will ever be able to just be a teenager. Her mother overdoses once too often and Makayla finds herself sent across state (Florida) to stay with her grandfather. There she helps to work on the Defiance,

I don't think I even got an hour into this.
Literally just the hospital scene, and I was done.

I don't know... something wasn't gelling for me. And looking at other reviews, I'm not going to gel with this book.

Like someone else said, this book screams paranormal from the cover, but apparently, it's not? So that's disappointing. Which is another reason I'm quitting now.

I don't have time to read things that aren't much interest to me, and I'm very picky when it comes to Young Adult.

I really enjoyed this coming of age story. All the characters are believable and real life. Makayla's friends are people you want to have around you because they love you for who you are, the strong, but maybe even flawed person they see and can empathize with; so when they're taken away, you feel lost, and in the end, you just want to get back to them, and that's where the journey begins. This book flows well, and keeps you wondering what's going to happen next. It would make an excellent movie ...more

I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review. Honestly, I did not like it in the beginning. As I kept reading, I found myself loving it! I’m looking at this story from the prospective view of growing up in foster care and understand the struggles of being forced to grow up at an early age. Some people don’t understand that and think because you are so young you cannot make your own decisions, they don’t always see the full picture. I could see how some would think Makayla to be spoil ...more

Overall I was bored, disinterested and at a few points personally offended, but before I get into all of that I feel I should mention that this material did not seem suited for the audiobook format.

At least, that is the impression the listener will get based on the performance of the narration of this story. The dictation, tone and emotionless dry speech strung together made it difficult to concentrate and empathize with any of the

Wow. I just don't know what to say.
Big thanks to netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read this amazing book!

I have so many good things to say about this!! :D
Firstly the start was captivating, we jumped right into the action of Makayla getting called to the principals office to be told her mum has been taken to hospital. As our first time seeing the character I loved her upfront sarcasm and wit. She is one of the most inspirational characters I have read in a long time. I just had to wri

I received a copy of this story from Net Galley. Yay books!

Spoilers possible ahead...

This story started out slow. Truthfully, it didn't start getting good until they were on the boat. Then I didn't want to put it down. You learn a lot about the characters in the beginning, but they discover more about themselves while on the journey. Things they thought they couldn't do. Things they they never dreamed they would do. And that maybe the things that seemed bad before, don't seem all that bad now. F

Although this book seems to be aimed at the 'young adult' market , I think that is suitable for all age ranges .
I found Makayla's voyage of discovery to be beautifully written . Her interactions with her grandfather and Tyrell are central to the story as they also discover more things about themselves too . Some of the struggles Makayla encounters in life are so ageless. They affect us all.

The depth of character writing is what makes this book such a good read .

When I first read S.E. Smith, her books were funny and full of firecracker women who gave their men hell. Lately she seems to have moved to a more serious type of book. Not that I enjoy them less, but I have to say I miss the funny.

This book was a magical blend of humerous, heart wrenching and touching. It opened my eyes. We are sometimes very quick to judge and put labels around people's necks. This book made that so abundantly clear. I loved every minute and did not want this book to finish.

Different for this author but an excellent read

I love this author's books and this is a new genre for her but I had pre-ordered it taking a chance she'd tell a good story. This was a GREAT story! I love to read and often find YA stories some of my best reads. This made me anxious, angry, cheer, cry and made feel for these characters. This could be a family movie. I would recommend this to the high school age range to the elders in the family..both the male and female readers. Defini

Uniquely good!

This was a unique an d very interesting story. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. It isn't filled with hot steamy sex, or hot fighting alpha males. It's filled with honest heartwarming great characters with real issues who find the strength to fight their way through to their happy place. Highly recommend and can't wait to read the next one in the series. Love her paranormal series and I love this breaking free concept too. Excellent!!!

I just finished the story and I've got a big grin on my face. Oh how I love A ship adventure with the big ocean and all the lessons we learn from it. Before I started reading this book I was worried there wouldn't be any romance but there was some and that was enough. Great adventure on the sea.

I don't really read too many YA books. I have to say that Voyage of the Defiance is one that I am glad to have read. A great coming of age story. This book may be one of S.E. Smith's best works. I would recommend this story to anyone!

The story was good for someone Under 18. I made the mistake and purchased the book because the author is usually always a 4-5 star ratings for adults. My mistake for not catching young adult. It is a heartwarming tale.
