For a book written in 1961 this novel is still engaging and thought provoking. I was expecting it be dated, somehow I thought Cusak's style would be too much of a bygone era, I was wrong. Cusak's ability to describe the main character's internal landscape as she is introduced to her in-laws in Germany after ten years of living with her German refugee husband, was so credible. The descriptions too of Berlin in the 1960s parts still in rubble and other areas rising up from the ashes into a new mod ...more

Dymphna Cusack AM (21 September 1902 — 19 October 1981) was an Australian author. Born in West Wyalong, New South Wales, Dymphna Cusack was educated at St Ursula's College, and graduated from Sydney University with an honours degree in Arts and a diploma in Education. She worked as a teacher until she retired in 1944 for health reasons.
