An interesting collection of Believe It or Not panels and tidbits, just a lot more of them than they usual BION mass market paperback. Most are pretty arcane by trivia standards, but this one has mostly the original artwork by Ripley and Norbert Pearlroth, so it's got a lot of intricate detail - much more than you'd usually find in a daily panel strip. A good read for anyone who likes this oddities and strangeness.
This is the first one to reach for during fire. I have had this book for years and still haven't finished it. One of my treasured possessions along with other vintage Ripley's. Absolute detest modern versions of Ripley's since the whole magic and enchantment with this genius were the unbelievable otherworldly masterful sketches. What is the point if one instead just inserts photos? Doesn't stay true to the brand, imo.
Hence, these editions with the original sketches are like the inner chamber of Phantom in his Skull Cave. You know Alexander's cup, Caeser's laurel, Robinson Crusoe (first edition), mummified asp of Cleopatra etc.
I think I ordered it from online. There would to be a Ripley's Museum near my place at Buena Park and I a hardcover from there.
Of course, each page is full of delight, wonder and amazing bite-sized stories and anecdotes! Out of zillions to choose from one of my favorite is how a sadhu is purported to tell the pitch of any bowls while blindfolded due to his extraordinary power of senses such as his auditory skills!
I once sent a picture of all my stamp collection for appraisal. The person curtly replied: Your stamps have no value.
Well ultimately, value is to the eye of the beholder. Unfortunately the cover has fallen off. I perhaps would need to tape it. [Then again, I always hated restoration (be it muscle cars or paintings) as you are concocting a whole new thing with respect to ship of Theseus!]
Books like this remind me that one doesn't need to chase viral or fame or even gazillion dollars to be happy and find contentment. Give me this edition and infinite time to ponder... I would gladly zoom to a land of abstract imagination!
Gladly I would take this book to the desert. Deservedly part of that list.
Ripley's is just plain great! Another great old one I have, with yet more fascinating facts such as: I never knew what we've always thought of as Hawaiian music was actually composed by a German bandmaster, the songs adapted from old German folktunes. Huh.
