De bovenkant van Nederland #1

Holland from the top | De bovenkant van Nederland

Rate this book
A rare perspective on the Dutch landscape is provided in this stunning collection of more than 300 aerial photographs. Cities, farms, lakes, beaches, and fields of flowers are recognizable from above but are more abstractly rendered in the aerial view as if part of a different world. Travelers and newcomers to Holland will appreciate the unique images that celebrate the connections between earth and sky in this collection from an award-winning photographer.

All in all, best leuk fotoboekje.

This book was underwhelming due to the lack of descriptions for the photographs. There is a brief intro in the beginning (written in both Dutch and English) and then the rest of the book is 300+ pages of photos that are divided into chapters by region within Holland. Only 10-15 have captions that describe the context of the photos. The rest of the pictures are far less interesting simply because there is no way to know what you’re looking at or why it might be unique or special.

All of the pictures are aerial views. There are some pictures that are stunning views by themselves without knowing what you’re seeing. But, in my opinion, it was a small percentage. I am just someone who needs more info.

I should say it is a well prepared book with a pack of beautiful pictures. It is not intended for tourism purpose or becomes one. Sets of pictures tell the speechless story about remarkable landscapes, buildings, infrastructure networks, and outdoor activities which are bonded into provinces. The author do not (always) look for recognisable landmarks for those who hope to find several of them and I really appreciate this approach. In fact, this book wrote a lot of stories about Netherlands better than I had read before.

This book was given by my little friend in Netherlands when I stayed her house on May 2014. I love Netherlands and people there, thank you very much.
