I enjoyed this book. It had a really cool concept - grim reapers and killing people with their mind, so I knew it had the potential to be a really original story. I was surprised at the direction the book took (it wasn’t as dark as I thought, and it took more of a realism / black humour direction), but I still liked it. It was really well written, and I was instantly hooked.

All of the characters were really likeable. I felt like they

I raced through this book as if Death itself was chasing me!

"Grim reapers don't exist. They're as fake as the tooth fairy and unicorns."

*gulps*

Becoming Death tells the story of eighteen year old Madison Clark who after recently losing her job discovers a hidden family secret...she is a Grim Reaper! That's right! Madison has to follow Deaths instructions and mark people for their fate! This is by no means an easy task as Madison finds

Madision Clark is a great protagonist. She’s thrown into this world of immortality and death but still manages to juggle her everyday life of living with her best friend and struggling to find a normal job with being a grim reaper. She didn’t want to become a grim reaper, in fact she actually avoids reading the textbooks about how to be a grim reaper – which was kind of annoying as the reader because I wanted to know more about being a grim reaper!

The act of being a grim reaper was sometimes

Five of my Favourite Things About This Book

Grim Reapers
If you know anything about me, you’ll know that I am a little bit obsessed with the afterlife. I love horror stories, love books about ghosts, love films about them, and in that category fits grim reapers. I haven’t read many books that involve grim reapers (recs, anyone?) so when I heard this one involved them, I knew I had to read it. I loved the way they were represented in this book!

Modern
Grim Reapers have essentially been a part of

At 18, Madison really doesn't know where her life is going next but taking up the family business of taking souls was not what she expected! Understandably, she has trouble adjusting to her new job, it's violent and strange and terribly sad, but she's got to do it. Brown had a very odd way of setting it, with rules, classes, paperwork, hierarchy, just like a real business, even "Mr D" has an office!

It was a very cool, if morbid, premise and for the most part it was handled pretty

Melissa Brown's first novel, Becoming Death is an engaging dramedy about Madison Clark, a young woman who discovers that her hereditary career is Grim Reaper. Madison is a likeable and relatable character - at 18 she is unclear on where her life is going and how she's going to get there (which is pretty much how I remember feeling at 18!) After the Grim Reaper revelation dashes her hopes at romance and a "normal" life, Madison learns how to cope with her destiny, and ultimately takes charge of ...more

Goodreads win.

For me this book was small and I read within a day!
BUT it was still a brilliant book, and would love a sequel to this!

You don't see many Grim Reaper novels so it was a nice change from the usual Dark Fantasy!
