في هذا الكتاب يقدم ماكولاغ الحجج الرئيسية في الدفاع عن عقلانية التاريخ وأوصاف المؤرخين، وهو لا يقدم هنا الحجج بشكل متستفيض بل يحيل في أغلب .(The Truth of History ) المواضع الى كتاب أخر له وهو
من عيوب الكتاب من وجهة نظري الأمثلة فعلى الرغم من وفرتها وهو شيء يحسب للمؤلف الا إنها أمثلة تتعلق بالتاريخ الأوربي عامة والتاريخ الأمريكي خاصة، وهي في الغالب أحداث مجهولة للقارئ غير الأوربي .
